THE WORLD Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) has issued an urgent alert following a security breach of its official Facebook page, warning the public and its global affiliates to refrain from engaging with the platform until control is restored.
In a statement released from its headquarters in Athens on Thursday, the WFTU confirmed that unauthorised individuals had gained access to the Federation’s primary social media channel.
The organisation disclosed that its administrative team was working directly with Facebook’s security division to resolve the incident and regain full control of the page.
“We would like to inform you that the official Facebook page of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) has been hacked,” the statement read. “WFTU Headquarters is currently working directly with Facebook to restore full control of the Federation’s page as soon as possible.”
The WFTU, which represents millions of workers across more than 100 countries, relies heavily on its digital platforms to disseminate information regarding labour rights, international solidarity campaigns, and policy advocacy.
The compromise of its Facebook page poses a significant risk of misinformation spreading to its extensive network of trade unions and supporters.
In light of the breach, the Federation issued the clear directive to its members, partner organisations, and the general public to avoid all interaction with the page until further notice.
“We kindly ask you not to interact with the page and to disregard any suspicious posts or messages you may receive from it,” the WFTU emphasised.
The organisation did not disclose the nature of the content posted by the hackers or whether sensitive data had been compromised. However, officials stressed that they are treating the incident with the utmost urgency and are working around the clock to secure the account.
The WFTU has not provided a timeline for when the page will be fully restored but assured stakeholders that updates would be provided as the situation develops.
In the interim, the Federation encourages the public to rely on its official website and other verified communication channels for accurate information regarding its activities.
