WAEC Resit: A Lifeline For Students Or Band-Aid For Deeper Problems?

IN A BOLD move, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has introduced an initiative allowing students to retake their failed WASSCE exams within a few months.

Dubbed the ‘WAEC’ resit or “WASSCE PC1”, this innovation is set to roll out in January 2025. While it offers immense promise, it also raises questions about Nigeria’s education system and whether this is a lasting solution to the challenges students face.

Affordability should be prioritised to ensure equitable access, and the integrity of the resit process must be protected.

The introduction of a resit option undeniably comes as a relief for students and parents alike. For decades, failing one or two subjects meant waiting an entire year for another attempt. This delay has derailed the academic progression of many, forcing students to either take up menial jobs or lose motivation to continue their education. By allowing a second chance just a few months after the main exam, WAEC is addressing this critical bottleneck.

More so, this move reduces the immense pressure that students face during their first sitting. The knowledge of a resit option might ease anxiety, enabling some to perform better. It also encourages accountability among candidates, as they now have a quicker opportunity to rectify their mistakes and improve their grades.

For tertiary institutions, this initiative could ease the admission process. Instead of deferred enrolments due to incomplete results, institutions can admit qualified students sooner, reducing the backlog of pending applications.

However, these merits do not come without concerns. First, there is the financial burden on families. Nigeria’s economy remains challenging, and adding the cost of resitting exams to already strained family budgets could exclude many students from benefiting. While this initiative seems like an equalizer, it risks becoming a privilege only the well-off can afford.

Second, the resit option might inadvertently lower academic standards. The urgency and seriousness with which students prepare for the main exam could decline if they see the resit as a safety net. This could foster a culture of complacency, where mediocrity is normalised.

This initiative has potential, but it should be a springboard for meaningful, long-term change – not just a band-aid for deeper wounds.

Additionally, WAEC faces significant logistical and operational hurdles. Organising another cycle of exams will demand more resources, from invigilators to examination centres. If not managed meticulously, it could open the door to irregularities and malpractice.

Perhaps the most significant concern is that this initiative, though laudable, fails to address the root causes of poor student performance. Inadequate teaching, lack of learning materials, overcrowded classrooms, and failing infrastructure are some of the systemic issues plaguing Nigeria’s education sector. Without tackling these, a resit remains a temporary solution to a deeper, more pervasive problem.

In conclusion, while the WAEC resit is a step in the right direction, it must be implemented with caution and complemented by broader reforms in the education sector.

Affordability should be prioritised to ensure equitable access, and the integrity of the resit process must be protected.

Most importantly, policymakers must not see this as a substitute for addressing the systemic challenges in Nigeria’s education system.

This initiative has potential, but it should be a springboard for meaningful, long-term change – not just a band-aid for deeper wounds.
