        • South-West Council Chairpersons Ask Olaleye To Go Peacefully

FOLLOWING Monday’s exclusive report by National Record exposing a brewing internal crisis in the Nigerian Civil Service Union (NCSU) as a result of the refusal of the union’s Vice President, South West, Comrade Ashaolu Olaleye, to exit his elective position following his retirement from active service, the President of NCSU, Comrade Sunday Oluwole Adeleye, has taken a swift action to stop the matter from deteriorating into open conflict.

National Record had reported that Comrade Olaleye, who is serving his second term as Vice President of NCSU, retired from the Lagos State civil service with effect from Monday, October 9, 2023, having attained the statutory retirement age of 60.

A member of the union, one Abiodun Oyewole, had in a letter to the President of NCSU, dated 30th October, 2023, drawn the attention of the union’s national leadership to the fact that Comrade Olaleye had retired from active service having attained the statutory age of retirement from public service.

He warned in the letter that and there was therefore the need to declare his position vacant and subsequently replace him in order to save the union from unnecessary litigation and embarrassment that could dent the name of the union as had been witnessed during the leadership of Comrade Lawrence Amechi, who had refused to quit the union when he had retired from federal civil service.

        South West Council Chairmen Meet

Following Monday’s publication by National Record, the NCSU President reportedly advised NCSU state council chairpersons to urgently meet and deliberate on the validity of the retirement claim and if true, resolve on the steps to take to avert a crisis, reliable sources in the union who corroborated one another told National Record.

Comrade Adeleye could not be immediately reached to confirm the report as calls to him were not going through.

Adeleye reportedly challenged the South West Council Chairpersons to reflect on the matter on the consideration of what they will do if the retirement matter was occurring in another geo-political zone.

The meeting, which was via a conference call made by the Ondo State chairperson of NCSU at around 11am on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, the sources confirmed, resolved to advise Comrade Olaleye to go on his retirement peacefully, a message said to have been communicated to him (Olaleye).

At the moment, one of the sources said, stakeholders of the union in the South West as now shopping for Olaleye’s replacement, which may emerge in the next two to three weeks.

Claims of Re-engagement By Lagos Govt

Although the resolution of the meeting was said to have been passed to Olaleye; however, a source told National Record that he (Olaleye) is claiming to still be in service.

Comrade Olaleye’s alleged ‘Letter of Engagement‘

According to the source, Comrade Olaleye claimed that he had been re-engaged by the state government following his retirement; an employment status he is said to be hanging on to claim that he remains a civil servant.

A copy of the letter of the letter, entitled: “LETTER OF ENGAGEMENT AS A CLERICAL OFFICER (AD-HOC STAFF), and signed by Azeez, A. G. for Director, Library Service of the Lagos State Library Board, reads:

“I am directed to refer to your application for employment dated 10th October, 2023 and to inform you that you have been employed as Ad-hoc Staff to work in Henry Carr Public Library, Agege as a Clerical officer with effect from 16th October, 2023 on monthly salary of Thirty Thousand Naira (N30,000.00) only inclusive of other allowances.

“2. This is for your information.

“3. Congratulations!” Efforts to speak with Comrade Olaleye failed as he neither picked his call nor responded to our enquiry sms sent to him.
