NLC Mourns Pioneer Deputy President, Comrade John Dubre
THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday announced the passage of Comrade John Enas Dubre, its pioneer Deputy President elected at the inaugural delegates conference in 1978.
NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, announced the passage of the veteran labour leader in a statement dated September 1, 2020, although made available to National Record Thursday morning.
The statement, entitled: “Adieu Comrade John Enas Dubre: Nigeria Labour Congress Mourns the Passing of its Pioneer Deputy President;” reads:
“It is with a profound sense of loss and grief, yet gratitude to God that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announces the demise of Comrade John Enas Dubre at the age of eighty-two years.
“Comrade John Enas Dubre was the pioneer Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (1978 – 1981). He was also a pioneer member of all the statutory organs of the Nigeria Labour Congress – the National Administrative Council, the Central Working Committee, and the National Executive Council. He fought gallantly with other veterans to advance the cause of the Nigerian working class.
“Comrade John Enas Dubre was a trade unionist to the core. He was a former staff of AGIP Oil Company, where he rose from shop stewards to the highest position of the NUPENG National President.
“As the founding President of the Nigeria Union of Electricity and Gas Workers (NUEPENG) between 1977 and 1983, the late Comrade John Enas Dubre worked tirelessly to promote trade union values and unity in NUPENG.
“Nigerian workers mourn the demise of a great icon of Nigeria’s trade union movement. His uncompromised stand for truth, justice and equity would continue to inspire generations of trade unionists. Nigerian workers would greatly miss Comrade John Enas Dubre.
“Details of his funeral would be announced in due course by his family.”

The deceased, who went to the famous Urhobo College, Warri was the pioneer President of NUPENG from 1977-1983, under whose tenure the union established a tradition of struggle that elevated the welfare and protection of the rights of oil and gas workers above any other interest.
A statement by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) signed by the National President, Comrade Williams Akporeha, and sighted by National Record, said of the late veteran labour leader: “The late Comrade Dubre was a bold and tireless fighter, defender of workers’ rights. Our indomitable late founding President was a torn in the flesh of anti-labour managements in the oil and gas industry during his heydays in trade unionism.
“Even while on wheel-chair, he remains [sic] active and constantly in touch with the Union and participated actively at the 40th Anniversary Celebration of the Union in Abuja in December 2018.
