Nigeria Is Bleeding And Our Leaders Are Acting Like Bystanders; By Victor Itodo Abuh

NIGERIA is living through one of the most painful chapters of its history, yet the people expected to lead the healing seem strangely distant from the suffering around them.

Across the country, Nigerians now move through their days with a quiet, heavy fear — the kind that settles into the bones. Parents no longer wave cheerfully at their children heading to school; they pray, they worry, they wait. Villagers no longer sleep through the night; they listen for footsteps, gunshots, or motorcycles approaching at impossible hours. Even city dwellers, once sheltered by geography and illusion, now understand that nowhere is truly safe.

This is not the normal state of a nation. This is a country in distress.

Nigeria is not asking for miracles. Nigerians are simply asking to live. To travel without fear of abduction. To send their children to school without rehearsing escape plans. To worship without scanning doorways. To farm without negotiating with bandits. To sleep without setting traps.

What is even more troubling is how accustomed we’ve become to tragedy. A mass abduction trends on social media for 24 hours, only to be replaced by another. A community mourns today; another will mourn tomorrow. The national mood is one long sigh of exhaustion. And through it all, the people keep asking the same question: Where is the leadership?

For years, the government has promised action, reforms, committees, investigations, and task forces — yet the crisis has worsened. Citizens remember clearly when officials claimed to have identified terrorism sponsors, only for the matter to vanish like smoke. No names, no prosecutions, no accountability.

Such silence is not just suspicious; it is harmful. In times of insecurity, opacity erodes public trust faster than violence itself. Even the sense of urgency that should naturally accompany national chaos arrived only after the United States publicly labelled Nigeria a “country of particular concern.”

It took foreign pressure — not the cries of grieving mothers, not the abductions of schoolchildren, not the daily killings — to push the government into motion. This alone says something deeply unsettling about where citizens rank in the order of national priorities.

At the same time, the recycling of the same old political elites into critical positions continues, as though competence is a privilege reserved for a small circle of familiar faces. In a nation of brilliant, diverse and capable people, it is absurd to suggest that leadership must always come from the same political pool. This culture of recycling is not harmless; it is one of the reasons that Nigeria is stuck and spins in the same place while other nations sprint ahead. If the same hands keep steering the ship, how can we expect a different destination?

Nigeria is bleeding, yes. But a nation can still heal when those entrusted with power decide that the lives of citizens matter more than the preservation of political comfort.

Politics has already shifted into full gear for the 2027 elections, even as insecurity gnaws at the country’s fabric. Billboards are rising. Alliances are forming. Power blocs are positioning themselves. Yet the land beneath these political aspirations is trembling.

The hard truth is this: there may be no credible elections in 2027 if insecurity continues at this pace. A nation struggling to protect its citizens cannot guarantee the safety of voters, poll officials, or the electoral process.

Nigeria is not asking for miracles. Nigerians are simply asking to live. To travel without fear of abduction. To send their children to school without rehearsing escape plans. To worship without scanning doorways. To farm without negotiating with bandits. To sleep without setting traps.

The government must realise that security is not just a campaign promise — it is the foundation of every functioning society. Without it, nothing else works: not the economy, not education, not health, not democracy.

There is still time to change course. But that time is running out.

For once, leadership must rise above politics. It must rise above excuses. It must rise above old habits of secrecy and patronage. The country needs honesty, competence, transparency, and urgency — not recycled elites, not shadowy lists, not defensive press conferences.

Nigeria is bleeding, yes. But a nation can still heal when those entrusted with power decide that the lives of citizens matter more than the preservation of political comfort.

The question now is simple: Will our leaders act — or watch?
