UNEMPLOYMENT remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing socio-economic challenges, with direct and indirect consequences on national security. As joblessness continues to rise, particularly among young people, insecurity has become deeply entrenched in communities across the country. From banditry and cybercrime to violent extremism, the link between unemployment and insecurity is undeniable.

         A Growing Crisis of Joblessness

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria’s unemployment rate has hovered at troubling levels in recent years, with youth unemployment making up the largest share. For many graduates, years of academic pursuit culminate in a prolonged and frustrating job hunt, often without success. The limited availability of decent jobs pushes many into underemployment, menial labour, or outright idleness.

This lack of economic opportunities creates a fertile ground for desperation. Idle youths, particularly in urban centres and rural communities with little state presence, often fall prey to criminal recruiters who exploit their vulnerability with promises of income and belonging.

Unemployment and the Turn to Crime

The surge in internet fraud, locally known as yahoo-yahoo, is one of the clearest manifestations of unemployment among Nigerian youths. With few legitimate paths to financial stability, many turn to cybercrime as an alternative livelihood. Similarly, armed robbery, kidnapping for ransom and cultism have become prevalent, with unemployed youths forming the bulk of those arrested for such crimes.

In northern Nigeria, joblessness has also been linked to the recruitment drive of extremist groups and bandit gangs. These groups lure vulnerable young men with stipends, food and a sense of purpose, filling the void left by economic exclusion.

        Psychological Toll and Social Unrest

Unemployment does not only breed crime; it also deepens frustration, hopelessness and resentment. For many young Nigerians, years of education and skill acquisition seem wasted in a system unable to provide opportunities. This disillusionment often translates into protests, street violence and in some cases, active involvement in armed conflict.

The psychological impact of unemployment—low self-worth, depression, and anger—has also been cited by experts as a driver of domestic violence and community clashes, further compounding insecurity.

The Role of Government and Private Sector

Addressing unemployment as a driver of insecurity requires coordinated efforts. While government policies have emphasized youth empowerment and job creation, implementation gaps and corruption often hinder results. Initiatives such as vocational training, entrepreneurship loans and digital economy programs exist, but their reach and sustainability remain limited.

The private sector also has a critical role to play. By investing in skills development, mentorship and job creation, companies can help absorb Nigeria’s ever-growing youth population. Partnerships between government, civil society and the private sector could be the game-changer in tackling both unemployment and insecurity.

        The Way Forward

Curbing unemployment-induced insecurity will require deliberate strategies, including.

Diversifying the economy beyond oil to create new jobs in agriculture, technology and manufacturing.

Investing in technical and vocational education to equip youths with practical, employable skills.

Strengthening social protection systems to cushion the impact of joblessness.

Promoting entrepreneurship through access to credit, mentorship and market linkages.

Prioritizing security sector reforms that address the socio-economic roots of crime, not just the symptoms.

        Conclusion

Nigeria’s insecurity challenge cannot be divorced from the high rate of youth unemployment. As long as millions of young people remain excluded from the economy, criminal networks will continue to find willing recruits. Tackling unemployment, therefore, is not only an economic necessity but also a security imperative. For Nigeria to achieve sustainable peace and stability, its youths must be engaged, empowered, and provided with genuine opportunities to thrive.

Abuh, currently doing his mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), writes from Abuja.
