A Makurdi Chief Magistrate’s Court presided over by R. S. Iyorshe, had on April 13, 2023 remanded 59-year old Kelvin Iorfa at the Federal Correctional Centre, Makurdi over alleged assault and attempt to commit culpable homicide, amongst other offences against his stepsister, Ms Nguwasen Iorfa, and adjourned the case to June 8, 2023 for further mention.

Although all media organizations including National Record, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Daily Trust and others (except those not accessed, reported the adjourned date as June 8, when National Record stormed the Chief Magistrate Court 1 on Thursday, June 8, 2023 to listen to the proceedings of the case, the court did not sit.

However, available records confirmed by a staff of the court showed August 8 rather than June 8 as earlier reported.

It was not clear whether the court had shifted the adjourned June 8 date for Iorfa’s case to August 8 and reflected same in the document after the journalists had left with the information of the first adjournment (June 8) or the journalists misheard the date.

The availability of Kelvin Iorfa’s name on the court’s document to be called on August 8 was also a clear confirmation that the court did not withdraw the suit against him as solicited by his brutalised stepsister, Ms Nguwasen Iorfa, on the ground that it was a family matter.

Nguwasen Iorfa who was allegedly beaten to comma by Kelvin, as revealed by a viral video later warned members of the public to steer clear of the case on the above ground.

But Nguwasen only made her decision known in a video on social media and she did not mention in the video whether she had officially informed the court in writing to withdraw the suit even as she did not personally drag Kelvin to court but pressures from civil society organisations and human rights activists that compelled the police to arrest Kelvin and later charged him to court from where he was remanded on alleged attempted homicide.
