THE AFRICAN Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) has issued a strong condemnation of a terrorist attack on Niger’s main international airport, expressing solidarity with the West African nation’s people, workers, and government.
In a press statement by ITUC-Africa General Secretary, Akhator Joel Odigie, the organisation expressed its “profound shock” at what it described as a “cowardly terrorist attack” targeting Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey on the night of January 28–29.
The assault resulted in significant damage and caused casualties among Niger’s Defense and Security Forces (FDS).
ITUC-Africa, which represents trade union members across the continent, framed the attack as an attempt to destabilise Niger and undermine its “patriotic march toward national sovereignty and renewal” – a path the country has pursued since July 26, 2023.
The statement warned that such acts aim to destroy infrastructure, spread fear, and sow chaos among the population. The organisation expressed confidence in the resilience of the Nigerien people, noting that they have refused to let the attack break their spirit in the struggle for “national renewal and shared development.”
ITUC-Africa also praised Niger’s security forces for their “exceptional bravery and gallantry” in responding to the incident. According to the statement, the FDS demonstrated “remarkable dedication and professionalism” in neutralising the attackers and defending territorial integrity.
It extended its solidarity to affiliated unions in Niger and urged continued efforts to ensure national stability and security. The organisation also wished a speedy recovery to the injured and offered condolences to the families of those killed while defending the country.
