MEXICO finally broke their long-standing FIFA World Cup opening-match curse in emphatic fashion, defeating South Africa 2-0 in a dramatic and ill-tempered Group A encounter that produced three red cards, relentless pressure, and a vibrant atmosphere inside the historic Estadio Azteca.

Sixteen years after these two nations played out a 1-1 draw in the opening match of the 2010 World Cup in Johannesburg, they once again had the honour of kicking off football’s biggest tournament. This time, however, there would be no shared spoils.

Mexico, roared on by more than 80,000 passionate supporters, delivered a performance full of authority and attacking intent to begin their Group A campaign on the perfect note.

The hosts wasted little time asserting themselves. After an energetic opening spell, Julián Quiñones gave Mexico the breakthrough in the ninth minute, sending the stadium into rapturous celebration and settling any early nerves that accompanied the tournament curtain-raiser.

The goal reflected Mexico’s aggressive start as Javier Aguirre’s side looked determined to seize control from the outset.

South Africa attempted to regroup and stay in the contest, but their task became considerably more difficult before halftime when they were reduced to ten men. Midfielder Sithole was shown a red card, forcing Bafana Bafana to play the remainder of the match with a numerical disadvantage against a Mexican side already dominating possession and territory.

Despite their disadvantage, South Africa showed moments of resilience after the break and briefly threatened to frustrate the hosts. However, Mexico’s superior quality eventually told.

Veteran striker, Raúl Jiménez, doubled the lead in the 67th minute, finishing clinically to give El Tri breathing space and effectively put one hand on the three points.

What followed was a chaotic finale that transformed a comfortable victory into one of the most dramatic opening matches in recent World Cup history.

South Africa’s frustrations boiled over as Zwane was dismissed, leaving the visitors with just nine men on the pitch.

Moments later, Mexico’s César Montes also received a red card, ensuring the contest finished amid controversy and disciplinary turmoil.

By the final whistle, the referee had produced three red cards in total, underlining the increasingly heated nature of the encounter.

Yet amid the disorder, Mexico remained composed. Their defensive organisation limited South Africa’s opportunities, while their attacking trio continually stretched a tiring opposition.

The hosts controlled the closing stages and comfortably protected their two-goal advantage.

The result carries significance beyond the three points. Mexico entered the tournament seeking to make a statement on home soil and erase decades of disappointment in World Cup openers.

Prior to this match, El Tri had never won the opening game of a World Cup tournament, recording a series of defeats and draws stretching back generations. Aguirre’s men have now rewritten that chapter in front of their own supporters.

For South Africa, the defeat is a harsh introduction to their first World Cup appearance since 2010. Hugo Broos’ side showed determination but were ultimately undone by indiscipline and Mexico’s superior attacking quality. They now face an uphill battle in Group A if they are to keep their hopes of progression alive.

As fireworks lit up the Mexico City sky and supporters celebrated long into the evening, the message from the hosts was clear. Mexico have begun their World Cup journey in convincing fashion. Two goals, a clean sheet, three points and a memorable opening-night victory ensure they sit atop Group A and head into their next fixture full of confidence.
