THE FEDERAL Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it recorded 16.2 per cent reduction in Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) during the 2024 Yuletide special patrol operations nationwide.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed disclosed this on Monday in Abuja while briefing the press on key issues of corps recorded during the end of year 2024 Special Patrol.

He said that the special patrol operations tagged; ‘Operation Zero Tolerance’ to road traffic crashes commenced on Dec. 15, 2024 and ended on Jan. 15, 2025.

Mohammed said that the aim of the special patrol was to ensure safety and security of motorists as they travelled through the Yuletide and into the New Year.

The FRSC boss said that the corps maintained a comprehensive approach in its quest to reduce the occurrence of RTCs.

This, he said, was also to mitigate the rate of injuries and fatalities from the RTCs in 2024.

“It will interest you to note that during the period under review, a total of 531 crashes were recorded. Out of these, 169 were fatal, 287 serious, while 75 were minor.

“The 2024 report was against 634 recorded in the same period in 2023. It represents 16.2 per cent reduction.

“Also, a total of 2,129 people were rescued without injuries, representing 8.2 per cent decrease when compared to the 2,319 rescued in the same period in 2023” he said.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, however, said that the corps recorded an increase in the total number of people involved, killed as well as injured.

Mohammed said that the data showed that within the period under review, 4,586 people were involved in RTCs representing 3.1% increase.

This, he said, was by comparison with the data of the same period in 2023 which had 4,446 people involved.

He indicated that 402 people got killed in 2024 exercise.

“Incidentally, within the period under review, 2,055 people were injured in both 2023 and 2024, “he said.

Mohammed said that the corps collaborated with the judiciary for special enforcement operations using the Mobile Courts sittings.

He said, “Out of these sessions, 1,013 traffic offenders were arraigned, 923 convicted, three imprisoned and 117 discharged and acquitted”.

The FRSC boss applauded road users as well as the critical stakeholders for their contributions towards the successes recorded in the year 2024. (NAN)
