RESIDENTS along the International Market–Ajaba Road in Makurdi have called on the Benue State Government to ensure the construction of proper drainage systems as part of the ongoing road project to mitigate erosion and flooding risks.
The appeal follows heavy rainfall on Wednesday night, which caused significant water pooling along the newly graded road near Sese Park.
A visit to the area on Thursday revealed early signs of erosion and flooding, sparking concerns among locals.
Mr. James Tyozua, a resident, expressed alarm at the rapid accumulation of water after just a brief downpour.
“The rain was heavy but lasted less than an hour. Yet, look at how much water has already flooded the road. What will happen when the rainy season peaks and the downpours last for hours?” he asked.
A motorist, Mr. Dennis Iorpenda, emphasized the need for immediate action, noting that drainage construction should have been prioritized from the outset.
“The road has been graded up to the paved section linking Yaikyo and Nyon communities, but without proper drainage, flooding will worsen as the rains intensify,” he warned.
An on-site assessment confirmed that erosion is already encroaching on nearby homes, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Residents are now urging the state government to intervene promptly to prevent further damage to the road and surrounding properties.
