THE BENUE State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Saturday elected a new executive council to lead the union for the next three years.
Comrade Bemdoo Ugber of Radio Benue Chapel emerged as the chairman, while other elected officials include Jerry Tyosase as vice chairman, Orymian Gwaza as secretary, Brenda Agba as treasurer, Moses Adikwu as assistant secretary, Terna Nengean as financial secretary, and Ene Akogwu as auditor.
The election, held at the NUJ Secretariat, Makurdi, was peaceful and orderly with all seven officials returned unopposed.
Dr. Chris Isiguzo, the union’s national president, represented by Comrade Kris Atsaka, vice president of Zone D, commended the delegates for the successful election and urged union members to support the new leadership in delivering on its mandate.
Comrade Ben Mnguityo, former NUJ chairman, emphasized the importance of leaving a legacy, citing his own tenure as NUJ chairman, which contributed to his two-term election into the Benue State House of Assembly. Hon. Peter Ipusu, representing Katsina-Ala West in the State Assembly, expressed confidence in the new executive’s capacity to perform and pledged continued support for the union.
In his acceptance speech, Comrade Ugber thanked Governor Hyacinth Alia for his support to the union and for fostering peace in the state. He vowed to ensure that NUJ members uphold their constitutional role of holding the government accountable to the people.
This development is expected to bring new energy and direction to the Benue State chapter of the NUJ, aligning with the national union’s goals of promoting professional standards, protecting journalists’ rights, and advocating for a free and vibrant press.
The Benue NUJ was engulfed in leadership crisis since 2020 after the demise of comrade Victoria Asher, culminating into factions. Ugber who emerged victorious unopposed during today’s polls had won 2021 chairmanship election and was sworn in before he was ousted after some months on technicalities.
