CAF Under Fire: Senegal Appeals ‘Unacceptable’ AFCON Ruling As Morocco Cites ‘Respect for Rules’

THE CONFEDERATION of African Football (CAF) is at the centre of a new storm after its Appeal Board awarded the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title to Morocco, a decision that has been fiercely rejected by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), which is now preparing to take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The controversy stems from chaotic scenes during the final match in Rabat, where Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch in protest over a disallowed goal and a penalty decision. In the aftermath, CAF’s Appeal Board on Tuesday ruled on case DC23316, declaring that Senegal forfeited the match. The result has been officially recorded as a 3-0 victory for the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF).

The Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF) confirmed it had taken note of the notification delivered on March 17, 2026. The federation explained that CAF upheld Morocco’s protest and overturned an earlier disciplinary board decision on procedural grounds, specifically citing a violation of the right to be heard. CAF ruled that Senegal’s conduct contravened Articles 82 and 84 of its regulations, leading to the forfeiture.

The FSF issued a strong condemnation of the ruling, describing it as damaging to the credibility of African football. “The Senegalese Football Federation denounces an unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable decision,” the statement read, confirming its intention to challenge the verdict. “To defend its rights, the Federation will initiate an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.” The FSF has pledged to keep the public informed as the legal process unfolds.

Meanwhile, the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) has acknowledged the CAF Appeal Board’s ruling. In a statement on its official website, the Moroccan federation sought to frame its involvement in the dispute as a matter of regulatory compliance rather than a challenge to sporting merit.

“The Federation reiterates that its approach has always been grounded in respect for the rules and stability of African competitions,” it stated, while also commending all participating nations for their role in a tournament it described as significant for African football development.

The FRMF indicated that a more detailed position would be released following a meeting of its governing bodies, stating the forthcoming statement would clarify its stance and outline any further legal or administrative steps if necessary.

The ruling by CAF has intensified debate over governance and regulatory consistency within African football. With Senegal heading to CAS and Morocco preparing its formal response, stakeholders are now calling for clearer rules and more transparent decision-making processes across CAF competitions. The outcome of this dispute is expected to significantly influence ongoing discussions on reforms and accountability within the continental football body.
