THE CHAIRMAN of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Benue State Council, Comrade Gideon Akaa, has urged the state government to review and enhance the operations of the Benue State Pension Scheme to ensure efficiency and adherence to statutory obligations.
Speaking during an appearance on Radio Benue’s Viewpoint programme on Saturday, Comrade Akaa raised concerns over the government’s alleged failure to meet its pension commitments, warning that the situation has caused significant distress among workers and retirees in the state.
“The government’s non-compliance with its obligations under the pension scheme is deeply troubling,” Akaa stated, calling on the relevant authorities to fulfill their duties to ensure the scheme functions as intended.
The TUC Chairman also appealed to governments at all levels to develop and implement economic policies that better support Nigerian workers. He noted that despite the existence of a national minimum wage, its effectiveness has been undermined by rising inflation and the high cost of living.
“The current wage structure has been rendered inadequate due to inflation. There is an urgent need for policies that align with the economic realities workers face,” he emphasized.
However, Comrade Akaa commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for initiating the training of 40,000 state and local government workers in e-governance, describing the initiative as a timely and strategic step toward modernizing public service delivery.
