THE ONGOING nationwide industrial action has paralysed both academic and non-academic activities at the University of Abuja, Gwagwalada.

Reports from the campuses of the university indicate that all education sector unions, including academic and non-academic, complied with the strike call by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to protest against the brutalisation of workers, including the President of NLC in Owerri, Imo State capital recently.

An impeccable source at the university confided in National Record Wednesday that leadership of the unions in the university had directed members to observe the strike.

A message circulated on the WhatsApp platform of UNIABUJA branch of ASUU warned that any member of the union caught breaking the strike would be made to go through necessary disciplinary procedures of ASUU.

The message, posted by Sylvanus Ugoh, ANIABUJA ASUU chairperson, reads: “Good evening Comrades, the NLC strike is on. ASUU is an affiliate of NLC. Therefore, the Leadership of our Union has directed every member of ASUU to join the strike. The strike is total and comprehensive. The Union [will] not hesitate to pass the strike breakers through ASUU procedures for breaking strike. Please let us be guided accordingly.”

In response to the directive, the Faculty of law circulated a circular cancelling some of its postgraduate activities.

The directive, entitled: “RE: SEMINARS AND PROPOSAL DEFENSES”, reads: “We regret to formally announce the postponement of the Seminars and Proposal Defenses hitherto scheduled for the 14th and 15th Nov. This is due to the national strike action which ASUU keyed into.

“As indicated by the Dean yesterday, same shall hold next month alongside Internal Defenses. Details shall follow in due course. “All inconveniences regretted.”
