TWO Students of the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State, identified as Sapele Great and Hakem Joseph Adi, have been arrested by the Benue State Police Command for allegedly transferring three hundred thousand naira (N300,000) from bank accounts of a Makurdi resident using ATM cards which they stole from the victim’s house while on robbery operation.
Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police (SP) Catherine Sewuese Anene, made this known in a statement on Tuesday.
“On 5/4/2022 at about 1030hrs, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP. Wale Abbas, received a report that on the same date about 0300hrs, armed robbers broke into a house at New GRA Makurdi and made away with ATM cards, phones and other belongings. The robbers transferred three hundred thousand (#300,000) from the victim’s accounts using the stolen ATM cards,” statement revealed.
On how the suspects were apprehended, SP. Anene said: “The CP deployed a team of detectives to trail and arrest the suspects but the suspects who knew that they were being trailed took to their heels until 15/6/2022 when two of the suspects; Sapele Great and Hakem Joseph Adi of different addresses were arrested in Makurdi.
“It might interest you to know that these are students of JS Tarka University,” the PPRO added in a chat after the official press release.
The items recovered from the suspects, according to the statement, include one (1) locally made pistol loaded with nine (9) rounds of 6mm live ammunition, eight (8) phones suspected to be stolen, one (1) electronic shocking device, eighteen (18) SIM cards of different networks, one (1) United Bank for Africa cheque book belonging to Agasha Philemon Assume and other electronic devices suspected to be used for internet fraud.
The statement further revealed that the suspects had confessed to be cultists, armed robbers and fraudsters while investigation was ongoing to arrest others involved.
