THE FEDERAL Ministry of Petroleum Resources has described workers as the backbone of the Nigerian economy, a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Amb. Nicholas Agbo, said.
The statement, posted on the ministry’s Facebook wall, also noted that May Day, which began to marked as a public holiday in Nigeria in 1981, is a celebration of “the enormous contribution of workers to the country’s socioeconomic development.”
The full statement, entitled: “Workers Are Backbone of Our Economy – Ella”, reads:
“Workers’ Day Felicitation by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Amb. Nicholas Agbo Ella
“Every year, Nigeria joins the rest of the world in commemorating the International Workers’ Day on May 1.

“The event has its roots in the Labour struggle of the 19th century. In Nigeria, the holiday was first celebrated in 1981 in recognition of the enormous contribution of workers to the country’s socioeconomic development.
“At the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Labour Day reminds us of the sacrifices workers make on a daily basis to keep the oil and gas industry running smoothly.
“In furtherance of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, we are committed to improving workers’ welfare.
“The theme of this year’s May Day centres on workplace safety and health amidst climate change. In that light, I urge every staff member of the ministry to imbibe the work ethics that promote safety and healthy living.
