THE road from North Bank to Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University (JOSTUM) formerly known as Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi has been cut off by a heavy downpour which fell intermittently between 8pm-11pm on Sunday and fell continuously from 1am to 12 noon on Monday.

The rain also washed away major roads at the industrial layout while major drainages and channels in Wadata, Demekpe, Idye, Achusa and Wurukum market were submerged.

National record observed during a tour to some of the affected areas that many houses and perimeter fences collapsed due to the disaster.

A resident of Achusa, Mr Ternenge Iorhemba said, water flew into his room in the night and settled there but he did not know where he would evacuate his belongings to as the rain fell continuously until Monday afternoon.

A Motorcyclist, Musa Adamu, told National Record that he was conveying a student to JOSTUM at about 12 :30pm but had to reverse back because the road was cut off.

“I turned just like motorists were doing because there was no road and the water was much”, he said.

The Sunday-Monday flood occurred two days after the Cameroonian government reportedly closed black Lagdo dam and the water level at river Benue started subsiding. But the 17- hour rain caused the river to be refilled with water up to the banks which a resident of Wadata, Mr Adamu Umar, described as “dangerous if it the rain falls like that again”.
