AT THE quiet outskirts of Otukpo Town, where the bustle of urban life thins into farmlands, railway tracks and forest paths, Otobi-Akpa has become a community living permanently on edge.

What should be a peaceful buffer between town and countryside has instead turned into a killing field, where death now arrives with frightening familiarity.

In less than one year, Otobi-Akpa has suffered two deadly attacks by suspected herders and armed bandits, leaving families shattered, livelihoods destroyed and a whole community trapped in fear. The latest attack, which claimed five lives including a former House of Assembly candidate, Hon. Igbabe Ochi, was not an isolated incident. It was the latest chapter in a tragic pattern that residents say has become their new normal.

On April 15, 2025, the community woke to horror when more than ten people were killed in a night attack. Barely weeks later, another assault claimed additional lives. Many hoped the bloodshed would end there. Instead, the return of gunmen on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 has confirmed what residents have long feared: Otobi-Akpa has been marked as vulnerable ground.

What makes the situation particularly disturbing is the predictability of the attacks. The gunmen often strike in the early hours of the morning, moving through familiar routes: railway crossings, forest paths and poorly lit access roads linking Otobi-Akpa to neighbouring settlements like Ijami. These same routes, residents say, have repeatedly been flagged as security weak points, yet little has changed.

Otobi-Akpa’s geographical position appears to be both its blessing and its curse. Located at the outskirts of Otukpo, it lies close enough to the town to serve as a food supply hub, yet far enough to suffer weak security presence. Its proximity to forests and railway corridors provides easy escape routes for attackers, while its distance from major security formations delays rapid response when attacks occur.

The people of Otobi-Akpa now feel that this location has turned them into easy prey. Farmers fear going to their fields.

Traders close early. Youth volunteers now double as night guards, patrolling streets with little more than courage and local knowledge. Even these efforts, admirable as they are, have proved no match for well-armed attackers who appear to study the community’s movements and strike when vigilance drops.

The emotional toll is immense. Families are still mourning victims from last year when fresh graves are being dug. Children are growing up accustomed to gunshots. Mothers sleep lightly, listening for sounds in the night. The community no longer measures time by festivals or harvests, but by attacks; before April, after April, before January, after January.

Government statements and security assurances, while necessary, now sound hollow to residents who have buried too many of their own. Police investigations are ongoing, arrests are promised, and patrols are sometimes deployed after attacks. But for Otobi-Akpa, response after tragedy is no longer enough. What the community desperately needs is prevention.

The persistent attacks raise urgent questions about intelligence gathering, patrol coverage and the protection of border communities around Otukpo. Why are known access routes not permanently monitored? Why does security presence surge only after blood has been spilled? Why are communities left to rely on volunteer guards armed with sticks and torches against men carrying guns?

Tackling the crisis in Otobi-Akpa requires more than sympathy visits and press statements. It demands a security strategy that recognises the vulnerability of outskirts settlements. Permanent patrol bases, coordinated intelligence between local vigilantes and formal security agencies, surveillance of forest corridors, and rapid-response units stationed closer to such communities are no longer optional but essential.

Equally important is addressing the humanitarian impact. Widows, orphans and displaced families need support beyond condolences. Without livelihoods and reassurance of safety, displacement may soon follow, turning Otobi-Akpa into another abandoned settlement swallowed by fear.

Otobi-Akpa’s story is not just about one community; it is a warning. When border communities fall repeatedly without decisive action, insecurity creeps closer to urban centres. Today it is Otobi-Akpa on the edge of Otukpo. Tomorrow, it could be Otukpo itself.

For now, the people of Otobi-Akpa remain where they are, grieving, resilient, but increasingly exhausted. They are not asking for miracles. They are asking for the simple right to sleep at night without wondering if dawn will come with mourning once again.
