THE OYO State Government has announced that the Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Alakia, Ibadan, will commence international flight operations by June 2026.
Prince Dotun Oyelade, the State Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, confirmed the development in a statement released on Monday in Ibadan. He stated that the international terminal, currently at 15% completion, is projected to be fully operational by the set date.
Oyelade noted that significant efforts are underway to upgrade the airport to meet global standards. Key improvements include extending the runway from 2,400 metres to 3,000 metres and widening it from 45 metres to 60 metres to accommodate wide-body aircraft. Additionally, the airfield lighting has been upgraded to CAT C, and firefighting capabilities have been enhanced to ensure safety.
“Facilities for Customs, Immigration, and other critical agencies are also being established,” Oyelade added.
Meanwhile, domestic flight operations are expected to resume before the end of this year, as the runway, apron, taxiway, and blast pads are now 55% complete. The commissioner emphasized that local flights will recommence upon approval from the relevant regulatory authorities.
Oyelade stated that the upgrades align with the state government’s vision to modernize the Ibadan airport. “By improving our infrastructure, we enhance domestic travel and prepare for international operations,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the upgrade project was inaugurated on September 18, 2024, with the airport temporarily closed in March 2025 to expedite construction. (NAN)
