FRSC Recovers Toyota Camry Stolen In Benue Since 2015

FOR ELEVEN years, a dark green Toyota Camry vanished into Nigeria’s vast automotive underworld, its fate unknown to its rightful owner, Mr. Adeka Emmanuel Akoji. But last week, in a quiet government office in Ebonyi State, a routine document check brought the vehicle’s long odyssey to a dramatic end.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced the recovery of the suspected stolen saloon car, a feat that reads more like a cold-case thriller than a standard traffic operation.

The breakthrough occurred not on a highway, but at the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) Desk Office, where technology and diligence conspired to unravel an eleven-year-old crime.

The chain of events was set in motion on March 24, 2026, when an official from the Board of Internal Revenue’s Motor Licensing Authority (MLA) walked in to present documents for what appeared to be a routine vehicle registration.

The car in question bore a fresh identity: a new plate number, NKE500AE. But as the NVIS Desk Officer began a standard verification check, the computer screen flickered with a warning. Discrepancies emerged. The vehicle’s history was not clean.

Digging deeper, officers discovered the truth buried in the database: the Toyota Camry saloon had originally been registered to Mr. Akoji under the old plate number MKD659AG. A single phone call to the man confirmed the nightmare. He stated, with chilling clarity, that the vehicle had been stolen from him in Benue State on August 13, 2015 – a loss he had long since resigned to memory.

Acting with remarkable speed, the FRSC immediately alerted the Nigeria Police. The intelligence was passed to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad in Abakaliki, who launched a coordinated operation. On March 27, 2026, at precisely 1:50 PM, operatives swooped in and successfully recovered the vehicle, seizing a ghost that had evaded capture for over a decade.

The recovery lays bare a sophisticated attempt to launder the car’s identity. The original registration had been stripped away, replaced with a fraudulent new number in an effort to conceal its stolen past. Only the FRSC’s NVIS database, a national repository of vehicle information, was able to pierce the facade.

In a statement signed by Acting Corps Public Education Officer, Felicia Kalu, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, praised the “professionalism and diligence” of the officers involved.

He highlighted the operation as a testament to the power of inter-agency collaboration and technology-driven strategy.

“The Corps will continue to leverage technology and intelligence-driven strategies to rid the nation’s roads of stolen and improperly documented vehicles,” Mohammed said.

For Mr. Akoji, the news brings an unexpected end to an eleven-year wait. For motorists across Nigeria, the FRSC has issued a stern warning: the NVIS platform is watching.

The Corps advises all buyers to ensure proper documentation and verification through the scheme before any vehicle changes hands, as nationwide surveillance and enforcement operations are now being intensified.
