THE FEDERAL Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), through its Women Affairs Secretariat, has initiated steps to domesticate and implement the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018.

Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, the Mandate Secretary of the secretariat, announced this during a three-day workshop on rights-based approaches to disability-inclusive development, governance, and public policy.

The event, organized in partnership with the World Bank, brought together management staff and stakeholders from various sectors in the FCT.

Benjamins-Laniyi stated that the workshop aimed to develop strategies for establishing an FCT Disability Commission to ensure the full implementation of the Act.

She emphasized that the legislation is designed to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities and foster their inclusion in all aspects of society.

“The domestication and implementation of this Act in the FCT are vital for creating a more inclusive and accessible environment for persons with disabilities.

“This workshop will provide the necessary technical knowledge and skills to achieve effective implementation,” she said as she reiterated her commitment to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities, citing the establishment of a Disability Desk as proof of this dedication.

The desk focuses on addressing the needs of women and children with disabilities, ensuring they have equal access to opportunities and services.

Benjamins-Laniyi also acknowledged the World Bank for its support and affirmed the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike’s commitment to protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, describing it as a priority project.

Hadjia Majida Adamu, Special Assistant to the FCT Minister of State and Coordinator of the Social Investment Programme, praised the initiative, stating that it reflects the FCT’s dedication to building an equitable society where persons with disabilities are fully integrated.

Legal practitioner Rex Irame, Chairman of the Albinism Association of Nigeria (FCT Chapter), stressed the importance of proper implementation, warning that without action, the Act would lose its impact.

Dr. Adebukola Adebayo, a Disability Inclusion Consultant with the World Bank, expressed confidence in the Act’s full implementation, citing broad stakeholder involvement. He confirmed that the World Bank would provide technical assistance to develop the FCT Disability Policy and support the establishment of the Disability Commission.

The initiative underscores the FCTA’s commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities are empowered and included in all aspects of societal development. (NAN)
