THE CHIEF Medical Director (CMD) of Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Dr. Stephen Hwande, has cautioned against the use of social media to defame the institution, stating that such actions may result in legal consequences.
Dr. Hwande issued the warning during the official launch of the hospital’s Service Complaint Centre (SERVICOM unit), emphasizing that individuals with grievances should utilize formal channels rather than resorting to online criticism.
He explained that the unit was established to address concerns from patients and caregivers regarding staff conduct and service delivery, serving as a structured feedback mechanism to improve operations.
Previously operating online with dedicated phone lines, the SERVICOM unit has now expanded to a physical office to enhance accessibility and provide 24-hour service.
Dr. Hwande stated that all complaints related to hospital services should henceforth be directed through this official channel.
“The SERVICOM center is designed for legitimate complaints. While some may seek to politicize healthcare services for personal reasons, we encourage stakeholders to use the proper channels.
“Complaints will be documented, investigated, and resolved accordingly. This should reduce the prevalence of unverified allegations on social media,” he said.
Dr. Hwande also highlighted recent infrastructural developments at BSUTH, including the completion of a cancer center, a pediatric physiotherapy center, a pharmacosurgical complex, a molecular laboratory, a 200,000-liter water reticulation plant, and a VIP clinic. These facilities are scheduled for commissioning by Governor Hyacinth Alia.
He expressed gratitude to the governor for his support, noting that the hospital’s progress reflects the administration’s commitment to enhancing healthcare in Benue State.
The CMD’s remarks follow recent online criticism, particularly after he indicated interest in contesting the Benue North West Senatorial seat in the 2027 elections.
Some commentators on social media have questioned the timing of his political aspirations, arguing that his focus should remain on his role at BSUTH.
A few posts have also alleged that his divided attention has negatively impacted hospital operations, though these claims remain unverified.
