Beyond Familiarisation: Resetting Benue’s Information Sector For Modern Governance; By Lubem Tiav

A FAMILIARISATION tour of public service often degenerates into a ceremonial exchange of handshakes and hollow promises. Yet, Chief Solomon Terver Iorpev’s engagement with Media parastatals demands a different reading.

As a seasoned Media Practitioner stepping into governance under Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s administration, Iorpev’s visits to State agencies are less about political pleasantries and more about a calculated operational diagnosis.

The next measurable step after the diagnosis would be revitalisation of studios, green energy to achieve zero down broadcast and rejuvenate public media possessing the capacity to connect every citizen of Benue State to the vision of good governance as envisioned by Governor Alia and arrest the unpalatable narratives being spun on social media.

Beyond recent memories, the State Public Information ecosystem anchored by Radio Benue, the Benue Printing and Publishing Corporation, publishers of The Voice Newspaper, Benue Television and the Benue State Library Board has suffered systemic acute neglect. Obsolete equipment, weak signal coverage, delayed print runs and limited digital footprints have left these institutions gasping for breath to compete in a fast-paced media landscape.

By undertaking this novel exercise of stepping onto the floor of newsrooms, control rooms and printing plants, Commissioner Iorpev has since posted a determined shift from administrative oversight to hands –on reform. His professional pedigree equips him with a clear advantage, as he understands signal transmitters, editorial bottlenecks and newsroom workflows not as abstract policy concepts but as operational mandates that directly governs public reach.

In an age inundated with various Media handles, effective governance therefore depends on bi-directional communication. A government can execute ground-breaking projects in agriculture, urban renewal or healthcare upgrades but if its communication mechanism is silent or outdated, public trust vanishes and misinformation fills the void.

Rebuilding State-owned media is not merely an exercise in institutional pride, it is a strategic necessity for democratic transparency.

Furthermore, the visits should gravitate from photo optics to building an enduring media ecosystem, mutate into budgetary allocations, policy reforms, system upgrades and transition from passive oversight to active structural rehabilitation.

Benue State stands at a critical juncture in public communication. Chief Solomon Iorpev has moved from the position of inertia to mobility by identifying the gaps impeding optimal service delivery of the parastatals under the purview of the Ministry for Information and Orientation.
