LOCAL government chairmen and councillors in Benue State have had their tenure extended from two to three years.
The Benue State House of Assembly had during last Friday’s plenary, led by Speaker Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh, a day before last Saturday’s LG elections, approved the three-year tenure after amending the 2007 local government law.
The assembly amended sections 13, 21, 22, 27, and 43, adding resignation clauses which allow council members to resign at least 30 days before elections.
Additionally, the assembly confirmed the appointments of Halem Ikyo (Zone B) and David Ochapa (Zone C) as Deputy Clerks of the House.
The speaker explained that these reforms are intended to provide stability and consistency in local governance, ensuring that elected officials have sufficient time to implement their policies and projects, unencumbered by the pressures of frequent elections.
“This amendment demonstrates our commitment to strengthening local institutions and ensuring that our people receive quality services,” Dajoh stated.
