As Bombs Rock Maiduguri, Tinubu Jets Out For Royal Engagement, Delegates Security Response

IN A STRIKING juxtaposition of priorities, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the nation’s security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri following Monday’s devastating bombings in Maiduguri,Borno State capital, while departing for a two-day state visit to the United Kingdom.

The twin developments raise questions about the administration’s crisis management approach as the country grapples with escalating insecurity.

The President’s directive, announced Tuesday, requires security chiefs to establish forward operating bases in Maiduguri to coordinate responses to what officials describe as “desperate attacks” by terrorist elements.

According to a presidential statement, the measure aims to “strengthen coordination and intensify ongoing operations” against groups threatening the North-East region.

Tinubu further instructed emergency response agencies to provide comprehensive medical care to wounded victims and approved “additional equipment and operational support” for security forces – measures he claims were authorised prior to the latest attacks.

The Monday night assault, involving multiple bombings, resulted in fatalities and dozens of injuries, marking one of the most significant security breaches in recent months.

The President described the incidents as evidence of “desperate attempts by criminals trying to spread fear,” while commending troops who “successfully repelled coordinated attacks” on military positions.

Meanwhile, at approximately 10am on Tuesday, Tinubu departed Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport for the United Kingdom, accompanied by First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu.

The state visit, conducted at the invitation of King Charles III, includes meetings with the British monarch at Windsor Castle and is expected to yield memoranda of understanding covering trade, investment, energy transition, solid minerals, and security cooperation.

Senior government officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, attended the presidential send-off at the airport – a departure ceremony that proceeded as security chiefs presumably began preparations for their Maiduguri deployment.

The President has assured Nigerians that “no part of Nigeria will be safe haven for terrorists” and that authorities would “locate them and defeat them.”

The simultaneous execution of a high-profile international engagement while ordering subordinates to manage a domestic security crisis may test public confidence in the administration’s crisis management priorities.
