THE ALUMNI Association of the National Institute (AANI) has honoured His Royal Majesty, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, CFR, mni, the revered Obi of Onitsha, on the occasion of his 85th birthday, describing him as an enduring icon of statesmanship, cultural pride, and transformational leadership.
In a statement released on Thursday, May 14, 2026, AANI’s National Publicity Secretary, Engr. Ifeanyi Jude Ngama, conveyed the tributes of the Association’s President, Ambassador Emmanuel Obi Okafor, alongside the National Executive Committee and the entire AANI membership.
The association highlighted Igwe Achebe’s unique historical significance as a member of the maiden Senior Executive Course (SEC 1) in 1979 — the pioneering cohort that laid the groundwork for strategic leadership development and policy discourse in Nigeria.
AANI also celebrated the monarch’s distinguished corporate career with Shell Petroleum Development Company and Shell International in London, where he rose to the position of Senior Corporate Adviser, earning international acclaim for his intellect, diplomacy, and strategic foresight.
Since ascending the throne as the 21st Obi of Onitsha, the statement noted, Igwe Achebe has remained an exemplary custodian of culture and tradition while actively championing education, peace, national unity, youth development, and responsible leadership.
“AANI celebrates not only a royal father of global repute, but also a mentor, bridge-builder, patriot, and elder statesman whose influence transcends generations and borders,” the statement added.
Describing the monarch’s 85 years as “a remarkable legacy of integrity, excellence, service, and humanity,” the association noted that his leadership continues to inspire confidence and admiration across Nigeria and beyond.
AANI offered prayers for Almighty God to grant His Royal Majesty continued good health, peace, wisdom, and many more years of impactful service to humanity.
