RUMOURS making the rounds on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 that Nigeria’s oldest trade union, Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), had scheduled an emergency or Special Delegates’ Conference for next week has been dismissed by Comrade Bomoi Mohammed Ibraheem, NCSU’s General Secretary, as false and merely the rumour that it is.
Many members of NCSU from the FCT, South-West, South-East and South-South had inundated National Record Wednesday evening with calls asking if what they “heard about an emergency National delegates’ Conference was true or not.”
When National Record asked if there was a notice or circular to that effect or if there were conference documents sighted by the union members as well as the date of the conference, it became clear that it may have been a rumour which no one knew from where it emanated.
When contacted for inquiries via WhatsApp message on the rumours of the conference making the rounds within trade union circles, the union’s General Secretary promptly replied: “Thanks for your inquiry and the show of concern to balance your story. However, I regret to inform you that all I know is that there will be a NAC and NEC meeting and not SNDC [Special Delegates’ Conference].
Similarly, the Chairman of Chairmen of the 36 State Councils and FCT of NCSU, Comrade Kabiru Inuwa, in his response to an inquiry sms also dismiss the rumour of conference.
“It’s not true. We are not holding delegates conference, but rather we are going to hold NEC to put machineries and all other rudiments preluding the national delegates conference,” Comrade Inuwa stated.
Although both officials did not indicate the date of the meetings of the two key organs of the union, a reliable source, who pleaded anonymity as he is not authorised to speak for the union, told National Record that the meetings will hold on Tuesday, September 28 and Wednesday, September 29, 2021 in Abuja.
These dates effectively corroborate National Record’s report last week quoting credible sources who confirmed that NCSU’s National Administrative Council (NAC) and the National Executive Council (NEC) would be meeting to deliberate on the alleged retirement from service of NCSU’s National President, Comrade Lawrence U. Amaechi, on September 8, 2021 after 35 years in service.
