THE TRADE Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the management of Abuja Continental Hotel will meet on Oct. 12 to resolve a dispute over workers’ unionisation.
Comrade Festus Osifo, TUC President, disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday while speaking with newsmen over the August 24 protest at the hotel over alleged anti-labour practices and workers’ efforts to unionise.
Osifo said the dispute had prompted interventions by the TUC, Department of State Services (DSS) and FCT Commissioner of Police.
“Currently, a meeting has been fixed for October 12 for us to dialogue further. October 12 is just next week, Monday. So, we are expecting that all the parties involved come to that meeting and all issues will be resolved amicably,” he said.
He expressed optimism that the meeting would resolve the outstanding issues between the workers and hotel management.
He added that the Commissioner of Police in FCT had summoned the hotel management and affirmed workers’ right to unionise without victimisation.
“Unionisation is workers’ right and no worker should be victimised because he or she chooses to exercise the right to unionisation.
Osifo said the interventions were aimed at resolving the dispute through dialogue while protecting workers’ legitimate rights.
He said the TUC remained committed to protecting workers’ rights in both public and private sectors and addressing workplace disputes.
He urged employers to respect workers’ right to unionise and avoid victimisation or discrimination against employees exercising their legitimate labour rights. (NAN)
