How Desperation For Power Threatens Nigeria’s Democratic Future; By Lawan Musa Danlami

AS NIGERIA moves steadily toward the 2027 general elections, the political landscape is already charged with tension, ambition, and intense competition. Across all levels of governance – from local councils to the presidency – politicians are strategizing to either maintain their grip on power or unseat those currently in office. While political competition is a natural feature of democracy, the emerging pattern in Nigeria reflects something more troubling: a system increasingly driven by desperation rather than development.

What should be a contest of ideas, policies, and vision for national progress has, in many cases, become a struggle for control. This shift from service-oriented leadership to power-driven politics poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic future.

Another critical dimension of this issue is national unity. Nigeria is a diverse country with multiple ethnic, religious, and cultural identities. In a healthy democracy, this diversity should be a source of strength. However, when politicians exploit these differences for electoral gain, they deepen divisions and create long-term social tensions. This approach not only threatens peaceful coexistence but also distracts from the urgent need for collective national development.

At the core of this crisis is the perception of political office as a gateway to wealth and influence rather than a platform for public service. Since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, the country has generated vast amounts of revenue, particularly from oil. Scholars and analysts consistently point out that Nigeria is one of Africa’s largest oil producers, with earnings that should have significantly transformed the nation’s infrastructure and living standards. However, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

Despite decades of substantial income, millions of Nigerians continue to live in poverty. Communities across the country face poor living conditions, limited access to basic services, and rising hunger. Recent economic analyses further highlight that inflation and high food prices have made life increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens, many of whom struggle daily to afford basic necessities.

This contradiction between wealth and welfare is not accidental. It is deeply rooted in systemic governance challenges, particularly corruption and mismanagement. According to research by ActionAid Nigeria, corruption has a direct negative impact on citizens’ quality of life, weakening public services and worsening poverty levels. Scholars have long argued that when corruption becomes entrenched, it diverts resources away from development and into private hands, leaving the majority of citizens marginalized.

Further academic studies reinforce this point. Research on Nigeria’s oil economy shows a troubling relationship between resource wealth and corruption. One study found that increases in oil revenue are associated with significant rises in bribery, embezzlement, and financial misconduct.  Instead of translating into improved living conditions, national wealth often fuels a cycle of corruption that undermines economic growth and social development.

Even more concerning is the scale of financial loss over time. Estimates suggest that hundreds of billions of dollars in oil revenue have been lost to corruption and poor management since independence. This staggering figure underscores the depth of the problem and explains why, despite abundant resources, Nigeria continues to struggle with poverty, inequality, and underdevelopment.

Political scientists and scholars such as DA Yagboyaju have described Nigeria’s democratic journey as one marked by “squandered hope,” where the promise of democracy has been undermined by persistent political corruption and weak institutions. According to such analyses, the failure of leadership and the normalization of impunity have eroded public trust and weakened the state’s capacity to deliver meaningful development.

This context makes the current political climate even more alarming. As elections approach, the desperation to win power often leads to actions that undermine democratic values – ranging from divisive rhetoric to electoral malpractice. Instead of focusing on policy solutions to address insecurity, unemployment, and economic hardship, political discourse is frequently dominated by personal attacks and power negotiations.

Meanwhile, insecurity continues to spread across various regions of the country, affecting lives, businesses, and national stability. The inability of governance structures to effectively address these challenges further highlights the consequences of prioritizing politics over progress.

Ultimately, the success of Nigeria’s democracy will depend on its ability to move beyond the politics of desperation and embrace the politics of purpose. The stakes are high, but so too is the potential. With the right leadership and collective will, Nigeria can transform its vast resources into meaningful progress for all its citizens.

At this critical juncture, both incumbent leaders and opposition parties must rethink their approach. The future of Nigeria cannot be sacrificed for short-term political gains. Leadership – whether in government or opposition – must be guided by a commitment to national interest above personal ambition.

Countries such as India, Pakistan, and Malaysia, which gained independence around the same period as Nigeria, provide important lessons. While they have faced their own challenges, they have demonstrated the importance of policy continuity, institutional development, and strategic long-term planning. Nigeria, by contrast, has often struggled with inconsistent policies and governance disruptions, limiting its ability to achieve sustained progress.

For Nigeria to move forward, there must be a shift from personality-driven politics to policy-driven governance. Elections should be an opportunity to present clear, practical solutions to national problems – not a battleground for personal dominance. Political actors must recognize that democracy is not merely about winning elections but about improving the lives of citizens.

Institutional reform is also essential. Electoral bodies, the judiciary, and anti-corruption agencies must operate independently and transparently. Strengthening these institutions is critical for ensuring accountability and restoring public confidence in the democratic process.

ALSO READ: Borno: Empathy, Resilience And Zulum’s Enduring Spirit; By Zainab Suleiman Okino

Equally important is the role of citizens. Democracy cannot thrive without active participation from the people. Nigerians must demand accountability, reject vote-buying, and engage meaningfully in governance processes. An informed and empowered electorate is one of the strongest safeguards against political excesses.

Scholarly observations further emphasize that sustainable development is closely linked to good governance, transparency, and inclusive policies. When governments prioritize these principles, economic growth becomes more equitable, and the benefits of national wealth are more widely distributed.

As 2027 approaches, Nigeria stands at a crossroads. The country can either continue on a path where politics overshadows progress, or it can embrace a new direction where governance is rooted in accountability, unity, and national development.

The responsibility lies with both leaders and citizens. Incumbent governments must demonstrate commitment to delivering tangible improvements in people’s lives, while opposition parties must offer credible alternatives grounded in policy and integrity – not just criticism.
