        When Data Vanishes Faster Than Reason: MTN Must Do More Than Explain – Prove Its Billing Is Fair

        MTN NIGERIA’s decision to open its data billing systems and network operations to public scrutiny is a welcome step. Transparency is always preferable to corporate defensiveness, especially in an industry where public trust is indispensable. However, the initiative will achieve little if it merely becomes a platform for technical explanations rather than a sincere effort to address the widespread dissatisfaction of subscribers.

        For years, complaints about rapid and inexplicable data depletion have followed MTN like a shadow. The company insists that data consumption is driven by user behaviour, background applications, video quality settings, automatic updates and the richer content delivered through 4G and 5G technologies.

        While MTN’s willingness to submit itself to public examination is commendable, it must, however, be stated that the exercise will only succeed if it results in measurable improvements in transparency and restores confidence among subscribers who increasingly, and justifiably, feel that their data vanishes faster than reason and experience would suggest.

        While these explanations may be technically sound, they do not fully account for the volume and persistence of consumer grievances.

        NATIONAL RECORD’s lived experience mirrors what countless subscribers have reported. In recent weeks, more than 100GB of MTN data was exhausted in just over a week, and in some cases hours, under routine usage patterns for either a month or a week’s subscription. By contrast, data subscriptions of less than 50GB on Globacom lasted for approximately three weeks or longer despite comparable online activities.

        Such experiences naturally raise questions about whether all operators are measuring and charging for data consumption in exactly the same manner.

        Importantly, these concerns are not isolated stories. Across multiple media reports and public fora, subscribers have repeatedly complained about unusually rapid depletion of MTN data bundles.

        Recent reports documented customers alleging that weekly subscriptions were exhausted within 48 hours or less despite normal usage patterns, while others claimed that monthly data allocations that previously lasted several weeks now disappeared within days.

        Consumer frustration has become so widespread that it has triggered renewed calls for regulatory scrutiny and public investigations into telecom billing practices. Indeed, the problem is not new. Telecommunications regulators have acknowledged that data depletion remains one of the most common complaints in the industry.

        Previous forensic audits conducted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reportedly found that MTN and Airtel attracted the highest volume of complaints relating to suspicious data depletion, prompting regulatory investigations.

        To be fair, not every complaint can be attributed to network operators. The NCC has identified several legitimate causes of rapid data consumption, including background applications, software updates, malware, cloud synchronisation and location services. These factors undoubtedly account for some cases of unexpectedly high usage.

        Yet the persistence of public dissatisfaction suggests that the issue cannot be dismissed solely as customer ignorance. When large numbers of subscribers independently report similar experiences, the burden falls on the operator not merely to explain but to convince. Trust is not built through technical presentations alone; it is earned through verifiable transparency, independent audits and billing systems that ordinary consumers can easily understand.

        For NATIONAL RECORD, MTN’s public scrutiny exercise represents an opportunity as well as a test. The company must recognise that the central issue is not whether its engineers can explain how data is consumed. The real question is whether subscribers can confidently reconcile what their devices record with what their bills reflect. Until that gap is bridged, suspicion will persist.

        As Nigeria grapples with rising living costs and increasing telecommunications tariffs, all telecom operators must note that every megabyte becomes economically significant. Consumers who spend substantial portions of their income on internet access deserve clarity, fairness and accountability.

        The telecommunications industry runs on trust. Once that trust is weakened, no amount of technical jargon can easily restore it.
