THE BENUE State Government has directed all individuals involved in waste recycling, commonly known as ‘Babambola’ to register with the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Community Relations and Mobilisation for proper licensing and identification.
Announcing the directive on Wednesday, Mr. Godwin Denen, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Community Relations and Mobilisation, stated that the policy was introduced to curb criminal activities linked to the sector.
He noted that some individuals operating under the guise of recycling have been engaging in theft, prompting the government to take action.
As part of the new regulations, the Bureau for Homeland Security will vet and profile all recyclers to monitor their activities, track infiltrators, and curb crimes associated with the trade.
Mr. Denen added that the government will soon announce the registration timeline, after which defaulters will be reported to security agencies for arrest and investigation.
Residents and stakeholders in the recycling industry are urged to comply with the directive to promote accountability and security within the sector.
