IN OCTOBER 2024, Nigerian social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, took what seems to be a bold step into philanthropy with the launch of his non-governmental organisation (NGO), the Martins Vincent Otse Initiative.
Aimed at addressing pressing societal issues such as community development and the deteriorating state of public schools in Nigeria, the NGO garnered significant public attention.
However, the journey has been anything but smooth, with its purpose and credibility coming under public scrutiny.
A promising start
The Martins Vincent Otse Initiative debuted with immense public support. Within the first 24 hours of its announcement, the organisation raised over ₦33 million from eager donors. Music producer, Don Jazzy, led the philanthropic efforts with a staggering ₦100 million donation, underscoring the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s educational challenges.
This wave of financial backing reflected hope and faith in the NGO’s mission to create tangible change in underserved communities.
The hoax that shook the public
The promising start soon faced turbulence. In December 2024, VeryDarkMan claimed that ₦180 million had been stolen from the NGO’s account due to a hacking incident.
The news sparked widespread reactions, with many questioning the security measures of the organisation and the credibility of its leadership.
Days later, the activist shocked the public by revealing that the missing funds narrative was a deliberate hoax.
According to him, the incident was staged to highlight how quickly misinformation spreads on social media.
“Eighty percent of people on social media are dumb,” he said, criticising the public for accepting the claim without questioning its validity.
While his stunt successfully drew attention to the dangers of misinformation, it also sparked heated debates about the ethics of such a move, especially when it involved a fledgling organisation entrusted with public donations.
Lingering questions and scepticism
Despite its high-profile launch and substantial financial backing, the Martins Vincent Otse Initiative has yet to showcase tangible progress on its stated goals.
As of now, there are no documented projects or initiatives to indicate the NGO’s impact in addressing community development or the state of public schools. Instead, the organisation has been mired in controversies, including the hacking hoax and allegations about the misuse of funds.
The need for transparency, accountability
For many, the NGO represents a beacon of hope for societal transformation. However, its credibility has been called into question, and the public is demanding greater transparency and accountability.
To regain trust and demonstrate its commitment to its mission, the Martins Vincent Otse Initiative must prioritise clear communication about its projects, use of funds, and overall impact.
