THE INVASION and capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by United States forces are not hypothetical fables but a stark, real-world event. Along with Maduro’s ongoing humiliation via global television optics, the invasion represents a brazen and catastrophic rupture of the international order, confirming the most cynical fears about the application of power.

This act of unilateral military invasion and the abduction of a sovereign nation’s leader lays bare a corrosive and dangerous double standard that threatens the very foundation of global stability. The world must therefore confront the disturbing questions this toxic action by the US has inexorably forced on the universe.

First is the glaring but underlying hypocrisy. For years, the United States and its allies have, rightly, condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a criminal violation of the UN Charter, defending principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty. Yet, in Venezuela, Washington has become the aggressor that it condemns.

President Donald Trump’s celebration of a “spectacular assault” and his eyes on Venezuela’s oil reserves as “war booty”, expose the raw, imperialistic motives beneath thin veneers of “democracy” or “drug enforcement.” This duality is blinding: principles are weapons to be deployed against adversaries but discarded for oneself and one’s allies, as seen in the steadfast support for Israel’s campaign in Gaza.

This hypocrisy thrashes the credibility of the so-called rules-based global order. It begs urgent and uncomfortable questions: What now prevents Russia from going into Ukraine to capture President Volodymyr Zelenskyy or China from invading Taiwan? In other words, what stops other powerful nations from invading weaker ones under whatever pretext? The blunt answer, symbolise in US invasion of Venezuela, is not a steadfast commitment to law but strategic interest.

The scenario suggests that international law and order count for nothing for the super powerful. The tepid response from major institutions is telling. The UN says it is “deeply alarmed,” the EU issues cautious statements while questioning Maduro’s legitimacy, and the UK hesitates to “establish facts.” Certainly, these feeble reactions are a greenlight for further predation.

For NATIONAL RECORD, the U.S. action is a perfect message that for a superpower, the barrier is not legal or ethical, but logistical and strategic. It tells the world that sovereignty is conditional, a privilege for the powerful and not a right for all.

What negative repercussions does this invasion portend for the world when a superpower takes over the running of another country? The repercussions are already unfolding: the normalisation of armed aggression, the collapse of diplomatic channels, and the acceleration of a global arms race.

As a Nigerian solidarity group warned, this is “terrorism at the level of states.” It will not only breed global instability, it is bound to fuel resentment across the Global South, and validate the darkest interpretations of international politics as a lawless arena. In that case, the Chinese Foreign Minister’s condemnation of any country acting as the “world’s judge” will resonate powerfully in capitals that have long chafed under Western hegemony.

To describe the US action as explicit colonialism is an understatement. Trump’s declaration of U.S. control over Venezuela’s governance and oil resources, the abduction of Maduro to face charges in a foreign land, and the history of such interventions – from Nicaragua and other latin America nations to Iraq, Libya, etc – fit a clear pattern of imperialist interests: forceful subjugation of a weaker nation for its resources and strategic position, dressed in the language of righteousness.

Clearly, smaller, weaker nations are indeed no longer safe; their survival now depends not on law, but on the fleeting discretion of the powerful.

The history of the United States is scarred by a legacy of serial violations through open and covert operations as its military and intelligence operatives gambol across the world with impunity, unaccountable to none. While it embraces the International Criminal Court when it investigates others, it sanctions and ignores the same court when it attempts to inquire U.S. actions.

NATIONAL RECORD believes that the world now, more than ever before, with Donald Trump at the helm in US, faces a clear and present danger. The Venezuela situation, like many others before it, shatters the illusion of a universal standard. It creates a world where might-is-right becomes the operational policy, merely decorated with the language of law.

If this act stands unchallenged by meaningful global condemnation and consequence, it ultimately translates to a Hobbesian state of nature in international affairs.

The international community must be unequivocal in demanding for a single, consistent standard where the rule of law binds the powerful and protects the weak. The alternative is a descent into chaos where every nation, large or small, must ultimately rely on the grim logic of deterrence alone. The time for diplomatic platitudes is over; the integrity of the international system is now on trial.
