THE LONG-AWAITED 112th inaugural lecture of the University of Jos, Plateau State, North Central Nigeria, comes up tomorrow, Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the university announced in a statement on its website signed by the Registrar, Rejoice James Songden PhD.
The lecture, which will commence by 3pm, is to be delivered by 54-year-old linguist, a leading expert in Generative Syntax and Chadic Studies, Professor Lengji Nudiya Danjuma, is billed to be broadcast virtually.
Prof Danjuma is the Head of the university’s Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages.
The lecture, entitled: “The Verb is a Doing Word. Is it True?: The Universality of Language,” is scheduled to hold at the Aliyu Akwei Doma Indoor Theatre, By Faculty of Arts, Naraguta Campus, University of Jos.
The lecture will explore the universality of linguistic structures, based on years of research on African languages, including Ngas and Hausa by Prof Danjuma.
Danjuma’s work challenges conventional paradigms, offering fresh insights into the dynamic nature of verbs across global languages.
Prof Danjuma, who has over 60 supervised research projects (B.A.; M. A. and MPhil/PhD), 25+ publications, has accolades such as the African Humanities Program Fellowship.
The lecture promises to be a landmark event for linguists, educators, and language enthusiasts.
The Vice-Chancellor, faculty, and students will join dignitaries to celebrate his contributions to academia and community development, including his role in advancing indigenous language preservation.
