THE Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria’s second labour centre, on Tuesday frowned at the condescending attitude exhibited by Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, when he walked out on a delegation of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
Mallam Adamu, who received the representatives of NANS at the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Secretariat, had walked out on them after the delegation had expressed its grievances over the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
In a press release Tuesday evening, signed by its President, Comrade Quadri Olaleye, the TUC said it is ridiculous that rather than listen to the students who came to express their plight and strive to intervene, Mallam Adamu as a public officer instead chose to walk out.
In the press release entitled; “The Level of Impunity Exibited by the Minister of Education Adamu Adamu is Unacceptable to TUC,” the TUC said the minister’s action is condemnable and “discriminatory of some sorts”.
While calling on the federal government to find solutions towards immediately ending the strike, the TUC threatened to “embark on a solidarity strike with the University Teachers and their Students” if the issues in contention were not resolved within two weeks.
“Government must engage ASUU in constructive negotiations to find lasting solution to their complaints without further delay,” TUC stated.
