TROOPS of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), in collaboration with other security agencies, have raided and destroyed the hideout of a notorious bandit leader, Konyo Akwaza, in Gbise, Katsina-Ala LGA of Benue State.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Nigerian Army disclosed that the operation, conducted on May 18, 2025, was part of sustained efforts to eliminate criminal elements within the OPWS Area of Responsibility and ensure a peaceful farming season in the state.
According to the statement, troops of the 72 Special Forces Battalion, in synergy with other security operatives, captured and dismantled identified bandit camps linked to Konyo Amakaa.
The operation led to the recovery of assorted weapons, including one Submachine Gun (SMG) with a magazine, a locally fabricated rifle with a magazine, 7.62mm Special Ammunition, a Rifle Butt and Barrel, and 9mm Ammunition
Other items seized include three POS machines, two generating sets, a mobile phone, electrical cables, a painting machine, seven solar panels, and a half bag of suspected cannabis sativa (Indian hemp). Portraits of suspected bandit leaders were also found at the camp.
Commander Lauds Troops, Calls for Public Support
The Commander of JTF OPWS, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their success and urged them to sustain pressure on criminals threatening peace in the state.
He also appealed to residents to provide credible intelligence to security agencies to aid operations.
Bandit Leader Escapes, Issues Threats
Prior to the raid, Konyo was reportedly harbouring suspected armed herders accused of killings in the area. Security forces, acting on intelligence, stormed the hideout, but Konyo and his accomplices fled, abandoning their motorcycles.
In retaliation, the herders allegedly seized three motorcycles from villagers, accusing them of tipping off security operatives.
Following the destruction of his camp, Konyo took to Facebook, boasting in Tiv language: “Aõndohemba Akpongu atsaweregh” (God surpasses the Anus people), suggesting divine protection from the military. He also threatened, “No joy! No joy! No joy!” — implying unrest in Sankera.
Background on Konyo’s Criminal Reign
Konyo, a cousin of the late notorious bandit, Terwase Akwaza (alias Gana), had previously claimed to have surrendered arms six months ago during a peace initiative led by the Catholic Bishop of Katsina-Ala, Most Rev. Isaac Dugu. However, he remains a key figure in Sankera’s insecurity.
Residents now live in fear following his threats, as security agencies intensify operations to neutralize his gang.
