THE NIGERIAN media community has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Dotun Oladipo, Publisher of The Eagle Online and former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), at the age of 56.

A terse announcement of Oladipo’s sudden death was posted on GOCOP’s WhatsApp platform on Tuesday night by the organisation’s President, Mr Danlami Nmodu, at exactly 10:21 p.m.

The brief announcement did not disclose the circumstances surrounding his death, leaving members of GOCOP who were online at the time shocked and deeply saddened.

According to additional details reported by TheNiche Tuesday morning, Oladipo had reportedly been at his office earlier in the day when he suddenly took ill. He nevertheless drove himself to the hospital, where his condition reportedly deteriorated while he was receiving emergency medical attention.

The detailed circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear as of the time of the report, although he was said to have suffered a suspected heart attack while receiving emergency medical attention.

The sudden nature of his death has deepened the shock among his friends, professional colleagues and associates. Some of those who mourned him reportedly spoke with or exchanged messages with him shortly before his death.

Oladipo, popularly known by many colleagues as “Dotman,” was an active figure in Nigeria’s digital media industry and had served as president of GOCOP, an organisation focused on promoting ethical standards, professional excellence and sustainable growth among online publishers in the country.

A fitness enthusiast, Oladipo was reportedly at a gym with his wife earlier on Tuesday. He also remained active on social media during the day, with his last known post said to have been published at about 2:50 p.m., only a few hours before news of his death began circulating among friends and colleagues, TheNiche reported, adding that at the time of filing the report, further details about the circumstances of his death were still being awaited. An official statement from his family had also not been released.

Oladipo was the Managing Editor and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, the company that publishes The Eagle Online, which he founded when Nigeria’s digital news industry was still at an early stage of development.

He was regarded as one of the Nigerian journalists who embraced digital-first journalism at a relatively early period, contributing to the transition from conventional media platforms to internet-based news publishing.

Records from the Nigerian Media Leaders Summit indicate that Oladipo launched *The Eagle Online* in January 2011. His decision to establish the platform at the time placed him among the early generation of Nigerian media professionals who identified the potential of online journalism before digital news became a major source of information for Nigerians.

Under his leadership, The Eagle Online expanded into a broad-based digital news platform covering a wide range of subjects, including politics, business, sports, crime, health, entertainment, religion, lifestyle and other major national issues.

His death represents a significant loss to Nigeria’s digital media sector, particularly to colleagues who worked with him during the formative years of online journalism in the country.

Tributes and messages of condolence continued to emerge from members of the journalism profession, friends, associates and others who knew him, as the media community mourned the passing of a journalist and publisher who played a notable role in the development of Nigeria’s online news industry.
