THE TOR TIV, His Royal Majesty, Prof. James Ayatse, has called on parents to take greater responsibility for the academic and moral development of their children, as Vertex Nursery and Primary School, Makurdi, introduced new scholarships for orphaned and indigent pupils during activities marking its 10th anniversary.
The scholarships were announced on Wednesday at the school’s anniversary thanksgiving and Christmas celebration, attended by parents, education stakeholders and community leaders.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Ayatse stressed that children often mirror behaviours they observe at home, noting that parental conduct, commitment to education and cooperation with teachers play a critical role in shaping learning outcomes. He described parental care as central to both academic success and moral upbringing.
The Tor Tiv cautioned parents against publicly confronting or humiliating teachers in the presence of their children, urging constructive engagement instead. He said mutual respect between parents and teachers is essential for effective learning, discipline and character development.
The scholarship scheme was announced by the school’s proprietress, Prof. Felicia Ayatse, wife of the Tor Tiv, who said it was designed to expand existing support for pupils who have lost both parents or whose families lack the financial capacity to sustain their education. According to her, the intervention aims to reduce school dropouts and improve access to basic education for vulnerable children.
Providing background on the school, Prof. Ayatse said Vertex was established in September 2015 with 28 pupils and 16 staff, and has since expanded significantly. She noted that some former pupils are now pursuing further education in different institutions, adding that affordability and access remain key considerations of the school.
She also disclosed plans to establish a secondary school with a focus on science, technology and vocational skills, citing increasing demand for post-primary education in the state.
Chairman of the occasion and Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hon. Alfred Berger, said the anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on the need for sustained investment in education. He stressed the Assembly’s commitment to policies that promote access to education across Benue State.
In a separate comment, the Benue State Commandant of the Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS), Jov PC, said schools require adequate security to function effectively, assuring that security agencies would continue to support safety around educational institutions.
In his remarks, the Head Teacher, Mr. Emmanuel Ioryaa, called for increased support from parents and stakeholders to strengthen learning outcomes and staff welfare at the school.
The event featured children’s cultural performances and presentations.
