PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu has advised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to disregard distractions from “busybodies and bystanders” and remain focused on his duties.

The president gave this charge during the inauguration of the rehabilitated International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja on Tuesday.

Wike Renames ICC After President Tinubu

During the event, Wike announced the renaming of the facility as the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre (BATICC) in honour of the president.

Wike also named several halls within the centre after Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

President Commends Wike’s Transformational Leadership

Tinubu praised Wike for his commitment to infrastructural development, describing him as a “transformational leader” with foresight and determination.

He recalled his dissatisfaction with the dilapidated state of the centre during a previous visit and commended Wike for its successful rehabilitation.

User Fees Introduced to Sustain Facility

Wike emphasized that all ministries, agencies, and private users must pay to utilize the facility to ensure its maintenance.

He dismissed requests for waivers, stating: “If you want to use such a beautiful place, then you must pay something.”

Background on the Renovated ICC

Originally built in 1990 under the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, the centre had deteriorated due to neglect.

Wike revealed that the FCT Administration faced legal challenges from a former manager during the rehabilitation process but proceeded with Tinubu’s support.

Senate President Applauds Project Execution

Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended Wike for the timely completion of the project, affirming the National Assembly’s role in approving budgetary allocations for such initiatives.

The newly renovated facility, handled by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, is expected to host high-profile government functions, international summits, and corporate events. (NAN)
