AFRICA’s preeminent industrialist and philanthropist, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, has reaffirmed his commitment to expanding philanthropic investments aimed at uplifting vulnerable populations across Nigeria and the broader African continent.

The billionaire entrepreneur made this declaration during the TIME100 Impact Dinner, held on the sidelines of a prestigious event at ASPIRE, One World Observatory in New York City.

Dangote’s remarks followed his inclusion in TIME Magazine’s inaugural TIME100 Impact List, published on May 22, which recognizes the world’s most influential philanthropists.

The list features 100 distinguished individuals across 28 countries, categorized into Titans, Leaders, Trailblazers, and Innovators. Dangote was honored among 23 Titans, a distinction reserved for global icons whose philanthropic contributions have had transformative societal effects.

The elite roster includes luminaries such as Michael Bloomberg, Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffett, Melinda French Gates, David Beckham, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, Jack Ma, and Alex Soros, among others.

The selection underscores Dangote’s stature as a leading figure in global philanthropy, with the Aliko Dangote Foundation allocating an average of $35 million annually to humanitarian initiatives across Africa.

TIME Magazine highlighted Dangote’s extraordinary journey to becoming Africa’s wealthiest individual, with a net worth of $23.9 billion, amassed through ventures in cement production, agriculture, and oil refining.

However, his philanthropic endeavors have been equally impactful. In 2014, he endowed his foundation with $1.25 billion, dedicating it to addressing Africa’s most pressing challenges.

“Investing in nutrition, health, education, and economic empowerment is our contribution to setting Africans up for success,” Dangote stated, articulating the foundation’s mission.

Among the foundation’s flagship programs is a $100 million multi-year initiative targeting severe childhood malnutrition, a critical issue affecting millions across the continent.

Additionally, Dangote’s collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other partners played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s successful eradication of polio, a milestone recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020.

In the education sector, Dangote has made substantial contributions, including a $10 million donation to the Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology in Kano State.

His foundation also holds the record for the largest individual donation to a Nigerian university — a N1.2 billion (approx. $2.9 million) hostel complex at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, unveiled by the Federal Government in 2019.

Beyond infrastructure, the foundation prioritizes early childhood education through initiatives like Mu Shuka Iri (Let’s Plant a Seed), which trains local women as Montessori-style educators in Kano communities.

The foundation also provides vocational training, scholarships, and fellowships, including support for the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders program.

Reflecting on his philanthropic journey, Dangote credited his late mother for instilling in him the ethos of giving back, a principle that has guided his humanitarian efforts for over three decades.

He expressed confidence that his three daughters would uphold this legacy, both in business and philanthropy.

“I aspire to be remembered not merely as Africa’s richest person, but as its greatest philanthropist,” Dangote affirmed, encapsulating his vision for enduring societal impact.

As the Aliko Dangote Foundation continues to expand its interventions, its initiatives stand as a testament to Dangote’s unwavering commitment to fostering sustainable development and equitable progress across Africa.
