THERE are two estates every human being leaves behind. One is visible; the other is invisible. The visible estate consists of houses, bank accounts, investments, titles and every material possession accumulated over a lifetime. The invisible estate is reputation. While the first is administered by executors, the second is administered by memory. One is shared through probate; the other is preserved in the hearts of men.
Curiously, we devote the greater part of our lives to enlarging the visible estate while neglecting the invisible one. We labour for wealth, compete for influence, pursue recognition and sometimes sacrifice integrity on the altar of ambition. Yet history teaches a simple lesson: fortunes change hands, offices change occupants, power changes direction, but a good name endures long after applause has faded.
No parent should burden a child with the lifelong task of defending a damaged family name. No amount of inheritance can compensate for a legacy stained by dishonour. Property may sustain a family for years; character sustains it for generations.
The ancients understood this truth. Long before the emergence of modern civilisation, they discovered that character is the only wealth death cannot confiscate. The Yoruba captured it with remarkable simplicity: Orúkọ rere sàn ju wúrà àti fàdákà lọ – a good name is better than gold and silver. The Scriptures echo the same eternal wisdom: “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches.”
That is no poetic exaggeration.

Gold may purchase comfort, but it cannot purchase trust. Wealth may command attention, but it cannot command respect. Influence may open doors, but only integrity keeps them open.
I have watched public life long enough to know that nothing exposes the vanity of earthly pursuits like the passage of time. Men who once travelled with sirens now wait in ordinary queues. Those whose phones never stopped ringing suddenly discover the silence that follows the exit from office. The newspapers that celebrated them yesterday gradually consign them to the archives.
Power, it turns out, is only on loan. But reputation is ownership. The tragedy of our generation is not merely that corruption exists. Every age has wrestled with human weakness. Our greater tragedy is that society increasingly celebrates acquisition without interrogating character. We have become fascinated by success while paying less attention to the road that leads to it. We applaud arrival before asking how the journey was made.
That inversion of values is dangerous.

For every child watching, society is conducting a classroom without walls. They observe who we celebrate. They notice what attracts honour. They conclude, often silently, that results matter more than principles. Thus, another generation begins to mistake prosperity for purpose and affluence for achievement.
Yet life has a stubborn way of restoring perspective.
There comes a season when every title becomes ordinary, every office becomes vacant and every possession finds another owner. At that moment, what remains is neither the size of one’s estate nor the weight of one’s bank account. What remains is the verdict of memory.
Who was this man?
What did she stand for?

Did his presence heal or divide? Did her life enrich others or merely enrich herself? Those questions cannot be answered with money.
A good name is not built in a day. It is chiselled patiently by countless unseen decisions—when nobody is watching, when compromise is attractive, when integrity is expensive, and when conscience is the only witness.

Perhaps that is why the greatest inheritance is not what parents leave for their children but what they leave in their children. Integrity. Honour. Compassion. Truthfulness. These are assets no inflation can devalue and no economic policy can destroy.
As another week quietly draws to its close, perhaps this is an appropriate moment for personal stocktaking. Beyond our occupations, beyond our possessions, beyond the noise and demands of everyday existence, there remains one unavoidable question each of us must answer.
If everything we own were taken away today, what would still remain attached to our name?
For, in the evening of life, men are remembered less for what they accumulated than for what they represented.

A good name is not built in a day. It is chiselled patiently by countless unseen decisions—when nobody is watching, when compromise is attractive, when integrity is expensive, and when conscience is the only witness.
In the end, our greatest monument will not be erected in marble or bronze.
It will be engraved in the memories of those whose lives we touched. And that is a weight every thoughtful person should carry with reverence.
