THE Benue State correspondent of The Guardian newspaper, Joseph Wantu, has passed on at the age of 62 years.
TheWill reports that Wantu died in the early hours of Tuesday, 13th September, 2022 at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi after a protracted illness which he battled with since November 2021.
Wantu was said to have been in and out of the hospital for medical treatment and “was admitted to King Cross Hospital, Makurdi, last week’s Wednesday, but was discharged on the evening of Thursday same week.
“However, on Sunday, at about 8:00 pm, the hiccup ailment aggravated and he was rushed to Bishop Murray Hospital from where his case was referred to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital for better medical attention.
“Wantu has been on admission since then until news broke out this morning of his death before correspondents chapel members were on their way on a solidarity visit and prayer session with him”, TheWill reports.
Wantu was amongst the first set of graduates from the Benue State University, Makurdi and started journalism practice with the Nigerian Labour, a journal of Nigeria Labour Congress, and later joined Leadership newspaper.
He later joined The Guardian newspaper a couple of years ago when the then correspondent, Simeon Nwakaudu, who is now also late, was appointed as Media Aide to the then Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Nwike, the incumbent governor of Rivers State.
Comrade Wantu who hails from Kwande local government area of Benue State, is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.
