THE BENUE State Chapter of theNigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) has called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to extend his subsidised medical care policy to pensioners living in rural areas by utilising general hospitals across the state.

Dr Hwande, right, receiving certificate of commendation from Comrade Vembe during the courtesy call.

The NUP made the appeal on Monday during a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi.

The courtesy visit, led by Comrade Michael Vembeh, aimed to express gratitude to the CMD and Governor Alia for prioritising the welfare of pensioners.

Under the current subsidised medical care policy, pensioners admitted to the Muhammadu Buhari Child and Mortality Hospital, Makurdi, are exempted from paying for medical cards and consultancy services, as directed by Governor Alia.

Comrade Vembeh, however, pointed out that many pensioners residing in remote villages are unable to access these services in Makurdi. He therefore urged the government to expand the initiative to general hospitals across the state to ensure inclusivity.

In a gesture of appreciation, the Benue NUP announced its intention to purchase a nomination form for Governor Hyacinth Alia, supporting his bid for re-election in 2027. The union cited the governor’s achievements in transforming various sectors of the state’s economy within less than two years.

Responding to NUP’s appeal, Dr Stephen Hwande, CMD of BSUTH, expressed gratitude to Governor Alia for his commitment to pensioners’ welfare, particularly through the prompt payment of gratuities and monthly pensions.

He also acknowledged the governor’s contributions to the hospital, including the payment of outstanding hazard allowances and promotion arrears, totalling over ₦800 million.

Dr Hwande assured the NUP that their request to extend subsidised medical services to rural areas would be communicated to Governor Alia for consideration.
