AS POLITICAL activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, attention is increasingly turning to the individuals seeking to represent their people at various levels of government. In Okpokwu State Constituency of Benue State, one name that continues to generate conversation among stakeholders, community leaders and grassroots residents is that of Honourable Stephen Ejembi Ola, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the Benue State House of Assembly.

National Record gathered that following extensive consultations with critical stakeholders and community leaders across the constituency – notably the people of Amufu, the wider Edumog’Ehaje axis, particularly Ojigo Ward, his immediate political unit, and Ingle/Okpale wards – Hon. Ola formally declared his intention to contest for the seat.

Political insiders within the constituency confided in National Record that Ola’s emergence has been welcomed by many who view his candidacy as a blend of experience, community service and grassroots connection.

At 61, Ola brings to the political arena a lifetime of public service and leadership experience. Born on September 15, 1965, in Amufu Ikpoke, Edumog’Ehaje of Okpokwu LGA, he has traversed the worlds of his native hometown, education, public administration, community development and politics.

A graduate of Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Ola’s career trajectory reflects a steady rise through the ranks of public service. Beginning as a clerk at Ahmadu Bello University in 1988, he later joined the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) as an Administrative Officer before being absorbed into the mainstream Federal Civil Service.

Over the years, he served in several key ministries – Commerce, Industry, Education, Environment, the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, from where he retired in 2025 as a Director of Administration.

Ola’s ardent supporters argue that his extensive exposure to governance and administration gives him a practical understanding of how government policies are formulated and implemented. In a legislature often challenged by the need for effective oversight and informed law-making, many believe such experience could prove valuable.

Yet, beyond his public service record, it is perhaps Ola’s reputation for community development that resonates most strongly among constituents.

Here, the core advocates for Ola’s candidacy argue that he is a perfect fit for an infrastructurally-neglected rural and essentially agrarian constituency like Okpokwu. Stories were frequently told of Ola’s personal commitment to improving local infrastructure. One project often cited is his role in facilitating the construction of a road and bridge linking his community. Admirers point to this achievement not necessarily as a demonstration of personal wealth, but as evidence of his passion and commitment to mobilise people and resources toward solving collective challenges.

This grassroots orientation has become a central feature of his political appeal. In many rural communities where access roads, healthcare facilities, potable water and educational opportunities remain pressing concerns, voters often look beyond political rhetoric and focus on tangible evidence of commitment.

Ola himself describes his political ambition as one driven by the people. He told National Record that his major motivation stems from a desire, borne of proletarian upbringing, to improve the living conditions of ordinary citizens, particularly those who feel neglected by the political system.

His campaign agenda, he said, come out of an imagination around his lived rural experience of denial. This agenda, framed around five key priorities, include: improving education as a tool for poverty reduction, expanding infrastructure and healthcare access, providing clean drinking water and sanitation, improving rural road networks and strengthening agriculture through modern farming inputs and technology.

These priorities, he argues, aligns closely with some of the most pressing needs of rural communities across Okpokwu – whether in Okpoga, Ichama or Edumog’Eficho or Edumog’Ehaje – places he said paucity of basic infrastructure always rings natural. “Poor road network continues to limit access to markets, to healthcare, and a range of other economic opportunities,” Ola stressed, isolating the priority of road infrastructure to rural economy.

He also expressed concerns about youth unemployment, lack of educational access and poor agricultural productivity despite the latent potentials in the Okpokwu soil. But political observers note that the challenge before any aspiring lawmaker is not merely to identify these issues but to demonstrate the capacity to influence policy, attract development projects and effectively represent constituent interests.

Ola’s supporters however argue that his administrative background and longstanding engagement with community affairs place him in a strong position to bridge that gap.

Another dimension of his public image, which he was reluctant to discuss with this reporter, is his involvement in religious and civic activities. A devout Catholic and member of the Knights of St. Mulumba (KSM), Ola currently serves as Chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council of St. Josephine Bakhita Catholic Church, Jikwoyi, Abuja, where he is widely known by the nickname; “Choir Master,” reflecting his passion for church music and service.

In addition, he holds several traditional titles, including Akanaba K’Amufu, Odejo K’Edumoga and Oyame K’Idoma. These honours, together with his recognition as an Ambassador for Peace and other awards from community groups, have contributed to his standing as a respected public figure.

Recent public recognition of his service record further elevated his profile. During his retirement from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in 2025, colleagues, religious leaders and associates paid glowing tributes to his contributions, describing him as a mentor, community builder, philanthropist and advocate for peace and development. The testimonies painted the picture of a man whose influence extends beyond official positions into the lives of ordinary people.

Equally significant is the political confidence expressed in him by stakeholders of the African Democratic Congress in Benue State. His adoption as a consensus candidate by party stakeholders for the Okpokwu State Constituency contest suggests a broad level of support within the party structure and may strengthen his position as the election season approaches.

As the race toward 2027 unfolds, voters in Okpokwu will ultimately determine who best represents their aspirations. However, what appears increasingly evident is that Stephen Ejembi Ola enters the contest with substantial credentials: decades of public service experience, a record of community engagement, demonstrated leadership within religious and traditional institutions and a development-focused agenda.

For a constituency seeking effective representation and practical solutions to everyday challenges, his candidacy presents a proposition worthy of serious consideration. Whether that proposition ultimately translates into electoral success will depend on the verdict of the people. Yet, in the emerging political conversation across Okpokwu, Hon. Ola has positioned himself as a formidable contender whose experience, service record and grassroots appeal cannot be easily overlooked.
