TRAGEDY has again struck the Nigerian social movement with the sudden death of Comrade Oluseun Daniel Salako on Sunday, January 7, 2024.

According to Comrade John Odah, Comrade Salako’s lifelong friend and comrade, the deceased was alive and with friends up to about 11pm on January 6th when he retired to bed, but did not wake up on the morning of 7th.

Comrade Salako was, until his death, the General Manager of Central Business Towers Ltd, and estate manage firm incorporated by Trustfund Pensions and Nigeria Labour Congress.

A native of Ikenne emo in Ogun State, Salako was born in Lagos Island on 25th March 1959. He started his primary education at Olowogbowo Methodist School, Lagos Island but completed primary shool at All Saints Anglican Primary School, Yaba in 1970.

Salako became an apprentice printer at Victoria Printing Press in 1971 at No 35, Tokumbo Street, Lagos and completed the apprenticeship in 1977. He started extra-moral classes in 1976 and sat for GCE Ordinary Level examination in 1977 and passed with flying colours. He then proceeded to the then Federal School of Arts and Science, Mubi, in the then Gongola State, now Adamawa State, where he obtained his Advanced Level Certificate.

While in Mubi, Salako sat for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMBE) examination and was offered admission to study sociology at the University of Jos, from where he graduated with Second Class Upper’s degree in 1983. In 1989, Salako obtained M.Sc, in Sociology from the University of Lagos.

At the university of Jos, Salako participated actively as a progressive student activist. He was a member of the Pan-Africanist Movement for the Advancement of African Societies (MAAS).

At the departmental level, he was elected Vice President of the Jos University Sociological Students Association (JUSSA) in 198o/81 as a 200-level student, while at the university’s student union level, Salako was elected Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the UniJos Student Union in 1981/82. The executive council in which he served was regarded as one of the most progressive in the history of the university, as they refused to take any of the executive privileges that the student union leadership were associated with such as eating special meals, and staying in the official single room quarters designated for members of the student union executive council.

Comrade Salako started work as a teacher at the Holy Child College, Ikoyi, Lagos in 984 and later at Government, Victoria Island as well as King Ado High School, Lagos Island.

Salako rose to the position of Deputy Director in the Lagos State Ministry of Education from where he voluntarily retired in 2010.

He was a member of the Vision 2010 Study Group representing Lagos State and also Vision 2020 Study Group for the development of Nigeria.

Salako, 64, was a pastor at Christ Progressive Gospel Church and is survived by his wife and children.
