POPE Leo XIV has called upon the judges of the Vatican’s Tribunal of the Roman Rota to administer justice by harmoniously integrating rigorous truth with authentic charity.

The Pope issued this guidance during an audience on Monday marking the inauguration of the Tribunal’s Judicial Year.

The Roman Rota serves primarily as an appellate court for the Apostolic See, safeguarding rights within the Church, promoting juridical unity, and assisting lower tribunals.

Its competencies also include cases regarding marital non-consummation, dispensations, and the nullity of sacred ordination.

The Tribunal is composed of judges from around the world, appointed by the Pope for their doctrinal knowledge, competence, and experience.

In his address, Pope Leo expressed gratitude for their service, describing it as a “precious” sharing in the universal judicial function of the papacy.

He framed their mission with the Pauline expression “Veritatem facientes in caritate” (“doing the truth in love,” Eph 4:15), a theme central to his reflection.

The Pope emphasised that justice and charity are not opposing principles to be balanced pragmatically, but are intrinsically united dimensions that find their ultimate harmony in God, who is both Love and Truth.

He cautioned against two potential imbalances in judicial ministry. The first is a “misguided compassion” that risks relativizing objective truth, potentially leading to decisions, even in matrimonial nullity cases, that lack a solid foundational basis. The second is a cold, detached application of the law that fails to embody the respect and mercy required by charity.

“The process,” Pope Leo stated, “is not in itself a tension between opposing interests…but the indispensable instrument for discerning truth and justice in a given case.”

He outlined the necessity of rigorous procedural norms to ensure equity, warning that failure to observe these principles injures ecclesial communion.

The Holy Father also addressed the shorter process for declaring matrimonial nullity before a diocesan bishop, stressing that the manifest nature of the grounds for nullity must be assessed with great care, and that the process itself must confirm any finding.

Concluding his discourse, Pope Leo XIV underscored the need for continued serious study and application of canonical matrimonial law in fidelity to the Church’s Magisterium.

He entrusted the work of the Tribunal to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Speculum iustitiae (Mirror of Justice), as the perfect model of “truth in charity.”
