A SUSPECTED electric cable thief, whoidentified himself as Inspector Innocent Ishaku, has been caught allegedly stealing electrical cables belonging to the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDCO) in the Demekpe area of Makurdi, Benue State capital.
The incident occurred around 4am on Tuesday, when vigilant residents of the community apprehended the officer, believed to be in his early 50s, while vandalizing public electrical infrastructure.
According to eyewitnesses, two other suspects fled the scene during the arrest. However, they were later identified and apprehended after Inspector Ishaku named them as Isa and Mohammed, individuals reportedly known to residents of the compound belonging to the popular Alhaji Dash.
Items recovered from the suspect include JEDCO electrical cables, F connectors, and a police identity card bearing the name Innocent Ishaku with ID number 309976 and his photograph.
All three suspects have since been handed over to the D Division Police Station in Makurdi for further investigation.
As of the time of this report, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Udeme Edet, has not officially confirmed the incident.
However, a video clip has gone viral on social media, particularly on Facebook, showing Inspector Ishaku allegedly confessing to the theft.
