A POLICE Inspector serving with Operation Zenda, a joint police-military taskforce under the Benue State Police Command, Mr John Oriyan, has been given an award for gallantry, resilience and dedication to duty.

Inspector Oriyan has also been supported with the sum of five hundred thousand naira (N500,000) following the amputation of one of his legs after an accident while on duty.

The Inspector who has been bed-ridden in the last five months at the NKST Rehabilitation Hospital, Mkar in Gboko LGA of Benue after he was said to have been crushed by a vehicle while on duty in Adikpo, Kwande LGA.

CSP Gberindyer led other officers, unit heads and colleagues to present the cash donation and award to Inspector Oriyan whose leg was amputated as a result of injuries he sustained and still on the hospital bed.

Gberindyer, who is the outgoing commander of Operation Zenda in the state, said the donation was a contribution from his colleagues to help Oriyan to offset some of his medical bills and psychologically boost his morale, despite the over two million naira needed according to the management of the hospital to enable him to recover fully.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after making the presentation, Gberindyer described Inspector Orinyan as a dedicated officer whose service would be missed and prayed for his quick recovery in spite of the little contribution his friends from police have put together for him.

The commander, who expressed worry on Orinyan’s condition with one of his legs amputated, described the level of man’s inhumanity to man these days as worrisome, narrating that after his officer was knocked down, the owner of the vehicle disappeared only to surface days after with a court paper seeking release of his vehicle without any form of support to the officer.

However, Inspector Oriyan and his wife, Faith, were full of praise and appreciation to CSP Gberindyer and his team for their love and support.

According to Mrs Oriyan, “this is the fifth month we have been in the hospital since my husband had accident, his boss has always been coming to assist us and he has never allowed us to lack. I pray, may God protect and guide them all.”

Elated by the gesture, Oriyan thanked his commander and men of Operation Zenda for standing by him all through his trying moment and prayed God to refill their pockets and their families.

Operation Zenda, as a crime buster, has rescued several victims from kidnappers, dislodged bandits, armed robbers and other related crimes in Benue.
