THE Benue State Police Command has clarified that the mysterious death of a yet to be identified young man under the pedestrian bridge at the Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi on Wednesday night was a suspected case of accident contrary to speculations on social media that it was a suicide.
Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police (SP) Sewuese Anene, who confirmed the incident in a statement to journalists, said investigation to unravel the real cause of the death was still ongoing.

“It’s suspected case of accident not suicide please. Investigation will reveal details please”, SP Anene said.
However, an eyewitness claimed that the victim jumped from the bridge and fell on the tarred road where he was killed by a vehicle that was on high speed and he died on the spot.
His corpse was said to have been conveyed to a morgue in Makurdi, the state capital.
The Makurdi pedestrian bridge was constructed during the second term administration of former Governor George Akume around 2006 to reduce incessant vehicle accidents that were killing BSU students and consequent protests by the students which usually resulted in burning down of those vehicles and attempt to kill the drivers sometimes. Road bumps were also constructed to reduce speed of vehicles around BSU.

But the bridge has been shunned by both the students and Makurdi residents generally due to its porous surface that poses more risk to users.
It’s also nearly impossible for vehicles to speed around the pedestrian bridge where the unidentified person died because of the presence of road bumps in the area.
